WinterBlast pyrotechnics convention
set to make a bang in Lake Havasu City

Evening thunder is crashing over Lake Havasu City, as the Western Pyrotechnic Association begins its 15th annual WinterBlast convention. The conference opened at 5 p.m. Thursday and closes at 10 p.m. Sunday.
Kief Adler, association president, invited the public to assemble in Rotary Community Park at 9 p.m. Saturday, to watch the traditional state-of-the-art fireworks display. The 23-minute rocket show, launched from Spectator Point on the Island, will include never-before-seen pyrotechnics, he said.
He also invited the public to sit in the bleachers in Special Activities Recreation Area (SARA) Park at 5 p.m. each evening, where they can watch association members launch their own fireworks.
Adler described the association as a non-profit organization of about 750 pyrotechnic professionals and enthusiasts. Members are mostly individuals rather than corporate figures, and are devoted to promoting knowledge and the safe use of all pyrotechnics. The convention will consist mostly of seminars on law, safety and technical matters, he said.
“There’s a joke in pyrotechnics,†said Adler, now ending his second term as president. “Nobody is in this for the money. It’s not what I do for a living, it’s what I do for fun.â€
Adler said that Bill Page of Silverado Pyrotechnics would put on the Saturday night program.
“Page is probably the premier shell builder in the United States, and he’ll be showing things that no one has seen yet,†he said.
According to Adler, the big pyrotechnical companies that supply the fireworks are less interested in association members as potential customers, than being a part of an organization that fully appreciates fireworks.
“It happens because we share this common love of pyrotechnics,†he said.
Kief said that some states, including Arizona, have banned consumers from purchasing even “safe-and-sane†fireworks such as sparklers for personal use.
The Western Pyrotechnic Conference will be held today, 5-10:30 p.m., Saturday, 5-8 p.m., and Sunday, 5-10 p.m. There will be free admission to the bleachers in SARA Park each evening after 5 p.m. to view pyrotechnic demonstrations. A voluntary $1 per person donation will be requested of viewers. A $2 parking charge will also be collected to benefit local Lions Clubs and the city's parks and recreation department.
