Man, this is such a beautful country.  There is so much wildlife and open area we had to wonder, why are we all cramped up here in So Cal?

We had an incredible time, in spite of the initial problems with the wheel bearings on the trailer (pics to follow :D ).  We pulled into Bear Lake straddling Utah and Idaho about midnight on Monday night without sleep on Sunday night.  We woke up in a nice little KOA with showers (badly needed) and a laundry mat and a little general store  :good

We left there around 10am and went to a cool little living museum on the Oregon Trail in Montpelier, Idaho.  In it, we visited a mercantile to find out what we would need to take on our trip to "Oregon" and where everything would go on the wagon.  Then we hopped on a wagon and the lights went dim as it jostled around with us in it.  We exited the other side due to a broken axle and arrived in a camp where people there told us how they made rugs, butter and did washing out on the prairie.  It was really a cool exhibit to share with the kids.

We drove into Wyoming and headed up through Jackson to stay the night in the Grand Tetons next to Jackson Lake.  While we were there, a mama moose and her calf walked right through our campsite!  I wish I had the pics sized to show you all, maybe tomorrow.

Tuesday, we went back into Jackson had breakfast then turned the kids loose with $100 and told them to have fun.  They went to Ripley's Believe it or Not and the bookstore and candy shop.  LOL We went to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar Dillagaf recommended. This bar buys Jack Daniels by the barrel and bottles it there in commemorative bottles (yes, I got one :D ).  They actually bottle more Jack outside of Tennessee than anywhere else.  We also went to the microbrewery they have there and had an ale or two.  :drink

On the way back to Teton, we went on a hike, then hung out at camp.

The next day we headed to Yellowstone and were the first to arrive at a campground at Yellowstone Lake that had just opened that day.  It had been previously closed due to bear activity in the area due to the spawning of the trout  :eek  By the next morning, the place was packed.  I'm glad we had reservations.

Thursday we checked out the geothermal activity around Old Faithful and went on a hike to Mystic Falls.  Then we proceeded to the Old Faithful Inn for the night.

There I had Idaho trout and Elk Medallions for dinner  :bebe Oh, and I discovered a new drink called a "mudpot."  It's pretty much a white russian except rum instead of the vodka.  :drink I had several  :laugh

The rooms there were pretty reasonable, I thought.  I think it was around $110 a night, so we got two  :pirate

Then, the next morning, all refreshed, we headed out of Yellowstone (saw a bear on the way out in addition to all of the elk, moose and bison) and into Montana.  We made it to our friends house near Whitefish that evening.

BTW, it stays light until 11:00 pm in Montana in the summer!!!!!!

Their log cabin is very cozy, at least it will be when it is finished.  They are paying for it all cash and just doing a couple of things every summer until they retire in 4 years. They've been at it 4 or 5 already.  They have 20 acres.  It's 15 miles out of town on the highway, then 6 miles down a paved forest service road, then 7 miles down a dirt road.  To get out and make a cell phone call, we literally had to hop on the quad and drive 5 miles down the road to make a call.

They use propane and batteries for everything, but they will have some solar also when it is finished.  Propane lights, generator, refridgerator, you name it.  The well pump runs off the generator.

It took Jeff 6 days to plumb the little apartment they have in the shop and the house.  Then we got to go on a quad ride for one day and took the pistols up to the shooting range (abandoned rock quarry).  The last day we were there, we got to go fishing.  Cody and I had gone a couple of times before in the creek and lake, but this time, we floated down the Flathead River.  A friend of ours taught Jeff how to fly-fish and all of us caught something.  Some cuthroat trout, some rainbow.  The next day we packed up and headed home.

However, that wasn't too easy.  We left north Montana and drove for about 3 hours before we pulled over to sleep at a rest stop near Missoula.  The next day we headed out and got as far as Salt Lake City when we saw the Cabela's sign.  We had dinner there  :laugh and shopped for about 2 hours.  Jeff was looking for a fly rod but decided to wait.  They have guns there from the 1800s that you can buy!

After leaving Cabela's, we again headed south, though reluctantly.  Then we saw a sign that they were diverting traffic from the 15 to the 89 due to a wildfire.  So 6 lanes of Interstate were now travelling on a two-lane highway for over 100 miles.  It was a nightmare.  People were driving like idiots and there were many occassions that I seriously thought we were going to die in an accident.  Dude!  There are miles of red lights in front of you!  What good is it to get two cars further?   :pissed

By the time we got back on the interstaate near Cedar City, I begged Jeff to just find a hotel as I wanted a shower and a real bed.  The first two we went to were full so he drove about 3 miles through town to a no-tel motel.  But hey, it was a bed and a shower.  They only had smoking rooms  :puke but I got over it.  The place was the biggest dump I think I have ever stayed at.

Then, finally, we made it to Vegas just in time for check-out time from the 7-7-07 weekend, so traffic all the way home was a nightmare.  But the trip was great and we all had a good time and are home safe and sound.  Hope you all had a good 3-4 weeks.

Seriously, if the middle schooler hadn't have had to get back to school, we would have stayed at least another week.  I hope we can swing a trip back there this winter over Christmas break.

I'll work on the pics tomorrow, I promise!

Oh, I almost forgot, the kids and I did make it into Canada one day.  But I didn't see Kim Hanson  :stupid  I even scoped out some Labatt's in the liquor store, but he wasn't anywhere nearby, guess he already had some at home.  :beer

and now . . . the REST of the story.

Jeff's version hijacked from Rockbuggysupply.com

3 weeks 4000 miles and a damn good time.

Hit the Hammers on June 16th( the day we celebrate 17 years of wedding bliss ) and have a great time with a pile of good people in searing heat. Wayne you missed a good time.

Pack up the camper and the small trailer I bought with tools and head out late Sunday night because I can't sleep any way. ( Maybe 6 hours in the last couple days) We hit traffic in Vegas around  Midnight and as we slow down I hear the sound of a all familiar wheel bearing on the trailer. Now mind you I changed the wheel bearings be fore we left and installed the handy dandy Bearing buddies. I pull over and the bearing buddy is gone as well as the most part of wheel bearings. The wheel looks like it is ready to come off at any moment, its abot a hundred and eighty degrees out side and traffic is bottle necked to one lane. On top of that 3 miles of off ramps are closed.

I limp the trailer off the freeway and try and find a place to park, no such luck! after way to many miles with a floppy wheel My wife shakes her butt in front of a couple valet drivers and cons them into letting us use the employee parking lot. By now its 1:00 am and still hotter then the hubs of hell. I'm thinking its a good test for Baja being half asleep and having to fix something like this with no parts and send the family to bed in the camper while I'll excersise my Baja skills. 3 hours later I finally chewed threw the socket I was making a sleeve out of and had the wheel back on slatherd in plumbing faucet grease. My wife had hacked a internet conection from the hotel and located a trailer supply place 6 miles away. so at around 4:oo am I headed on a 10 MPH journey across Vegas to sleep for an hour in a bad part of Vegas. I heared a car driving down the street with a car alarm blaring gun shots and plenty of other loud noises. 2 hours of sleep later and a little lighter in the wallet because I had to kill some time in a casino we where off early afternoon Monday from Vegas.

I crossed the rest of Nevada, a sliver of arizona, and the whole state of Utah when I finally wore out in Bear lake Utah at around 2:00 am. the last 50 miles I saw trees talking to me, more deer then I cared to count and even a  Yeti wearing a SAM brero! I was giggling like a school girl and completly blowing bubbles at that point. Thank God for my Baja training or we would have been camped out in Ceder City!

The next day we slept into till 7:00 am an d did some laundry. You have not lived untill you camp in a KOA. I almost bought a pair of baby blue cover alls so I would fit in at the mini golf course. ma get some Lemonaid! and bring my belt!

Tuesday we hit the Oregon Trail disply and took part in a live re-enactment  Whooo hooo I would have been a trail buster in another life. next stop Jackson Hole Wyoming. They have a little too many elk antlers in that part of the country because they use that as an excuse to build some really tackey stuff outta antlers. We made camp in another made for camping parking lotr and watched a Moose walk thru camp much to the dismay of a parking lot full of yuppies whgo freaked out when I tried to rope the damn thing and go for a ride.

The Million Dollar Cowboy bar is my kinda place, You have to sit on a saddle at the bar which makes ladies in dresses a little bit shy of coming in the place. they have a stuffed bear in there that a man killed with his teeth. One of the only Known kills with out a modern hunting tool.

The kids and I went on a hike up the side of a mountain near the Teton's and I got the snot whooped outta me by a couplke teen agers damn near running up what resembled a trail in loose ball bearing type shale. The wife sat at the bottom and made friends with Jack Daniels. That's not true!  I went half way up, till the stairs ran out.  Besides, the dog needed me  :p

After a day there we headed to a camp ground in Yellow stone. It was opening day after a battle with a bear problem and the park ranger made it clear we should be extra carefull. When we arrived the camplikeparling lot was empty. Ya hoo finnaly a real camping ex[pearience. The wife and I deciede to live on the edge and sleep in a tent out side the saftey of the Cramper. It was her Idea truth be told I was scared as hell of bear eating my ass but was not about to be bested by a chick!

The steady stream of cars was akin to a goofy cartoon, from sundown untill we passed out drunk in the tent the stedy influx asured us we would not be seeing any bears! The next day we headed over to the Old Faithfull inn forr a night of a hot bath, and a  real bed. I bellied up to the bar with a view of the water gun and waited over a half case of beers for the thing to spit. We saw it 6 times and it was entertaining each time. I had a great time people watching there and found a hot spot where the Bison shit and got a kick outta the steaming( Burning) Cow pies. the ground was so hot there it would cook the crap. The VBison would come in ever night for warmth so I tied up my trusty hound near by and waited for a show.

They kicked us out mid morning and it was off to Montana. On the way I ran into a bit of a traffic jam a few times with the most stunning display of human stupidity I have ever witnessed. Bear like it when You get close with a camera. Moose like it alot also, but see how close you can get to a wild Bison. The bear was the best with a steady flow of cars blocking the road to get the perfect picture of BOO-Boo and his teddy bear like charm.

After another full day of driving we arrived in Nirvana. The flathead valley of Montana is heaven on earth, No Gang bangers no trash no anger just a bunch of blond haired white people with a shit eating grin every where you look. You can buy a gattlin gun in the local 7-11 you can run down to the liquor store on your quad for a 5th of Jim Beam, you can wear a hunting jacket in the grocery store and you can pack heat every where but the Post office.

Honstly all joking aside it was a great place and I can not wait to go back. I went Quad ridding and Fly fishing but spent most of my time there working on a dear freinds cabin 15 miles into the widerness with no electricity.

The trip home was a bummer. I left Friday night at 10:00pm and got home Sunday at 4:00 pm. a heck of a trip for a 1400 mile journey. Fires had most of the roads closed and traffic was terrible.

So there you have it I'm back in So Ca. and can not wait to get the heck outta here again. My Son asked us when we got Home" So why do we live here?" I have no idea?

Sounds like a cool trip Angie... and only a little drama...  :good

Yellowstone is a must see... I've always wanted to go back and fish there, since the rivers are like bath water with all the geo-thermal activity.  No waders needed...

The wheel bearing incident.  I was so proud of him.  He didn't yell or cuss or throw things, not even once.  I would have  :laugh

Nope, it's a beaver with the kid's awesome camera skills  :laugh

Paint pot.  These things are boiling water and they smell of sulfer.  The different colors represent different temperatures and the bacteria that can live in those temperatures is what makes the different colors.

This is one of my favorite pics. I did not alter the color of this at all.

Anyone for a swim??

This is the bus that will take you on a tour of the area.  It has a ragtop.  They have several of them that they just finished restoring.  This is the first year of "the return of the yellow bus."  Glacier NP has red ones.

Old Faithful herself.  It is amazing, the reliablity.  It erupts approximately every 90 minutes, but anywhere between 70 minutes and 120 minutes.  They can estimate it within 5 minutes based on the height and duration of the previous eruption.  We watched it 6 times while we were there.

We only got to see this happen the one time, but it was one of the most spectacular things I have witnessed.  I snapped about 5 shots of this:

There's something very appealing about simplicity. The Lodge area seems like it hasn't changed much in the 30 yrs since I've been there.
I can remember the stories about how the geysers in Yellowstone were affected by the eruption of Mnt St Helens....
.
Again, awesome pictures and memories you've created for your family Jeff and Angie.  :good
