I guess someone on this board may have an opinion on this.

I'm having 2 bathrooms remodeled soon. I'm pretty helpless when it comes to DIY jobs, so have had a few contractors give me some bids.

A couple have said they do not recommend Wonderboard, another said he can hand float the walls but he Does recomend Wonderboard and sent me an email with some info on the stuff.

Anyone have good/bad experience with Wonderboard ?

Hey Hockey.
The contractor we used for our bathroom remodels used wonderboard. That's been 5 years+ now, and there have been no problems with it or the work.

I haven't ever heard anybody say it was no good............. :confused

I've used it many times. Never had an issue. A buddy of mine was in building materials for years and first recommended it to me.
The only issue I could see is if you had to do some intricate cutting. It can crumble a bit if you have to cut it in small pieces. For floors that not really a problem, but could be for walls.
There's a similar product called Hardie board from James Hardie Ind. It holds together pretty good. Might be better if you have to make a lot of cuts.

As for loving remodels....   The wife and I are now reserecting the FIGHTS we had when picking materials for our Kitchen remodel a few years ago.

Here's the issue with wonderboard vs. a floated wall.
Wonderboard is perfectly fine to use if the wall is 100% straight, I've used it several times on different projects. Basically, when the board is screwed down it flexes and takes on the shape of the wall.
Many contractors prefer to float the wall so they can get a "true" surface.
The finished tile job will usually be more precise.

I like wonderboard for the ease and quickness but a float wall will make the tilework much easier and flatter.

Hardie Backerboard is a more dense material than wonderboard, and perhaps less appropriate to use for damp bathroom usage. I generally see it used for flooring.

OK, now I remember that's what one of the contractors had told me.

hmmm... My house is old and tweeked. I'll need to discuss this with the contractor I pick, see how un-true my walls are vs. the extra cost of the hand float.

Wonderboard is great for counters and horizontal surfaces, but we always float our walls over greenboard. Easier, cheaper and more conforming to inconsistancies in the vertical surfaces.

Yes, for now.
As you would expect, many little arguments over the past few weeks after looking at endless amounts of tile and little trim POS's.

Think we've decided on a travertine but still not agreed on some accent pieces. Then we need to start looking at faucets and things.   :cry
