OK, who's got one of them iPad tablets (or other?) and what do you do with it?  Our schools are "hot" for this device, but I just don't see it (vs a laptop/netbook).  Just a personal digital assistant, IMO... :stupid

What kind did you get? Mine is falling apart, will need one soon....

iPad's and their clones are going to be game changers, as their power and capabilities increase, so will their accpeptance. Kids can just pick them up an intuitivly make them work!.....I would probably wait a while for the power to come up and the price to come down a bit...

My doctor has one and he takes it everywhere... The key is all the apps an their development to make the thing more useful....From e-book reader to GPS map in the truck, to picture and movie viewer to remote control for lights in the house to medical record and EKG viewer and a way  set your DVR from anywhere in the world with internet or phone access...

It's just beginning......... :beer

My current tech environment is in the educational sector, supporting some 300 desktops and 150 laptops.  The big push is to put wi-fi devices in the hands of every student... :rolleyes

With some 1,200 kids in a lower social-economic environment, I can foresee big problems with these things "growing legs" and walking out the door... :beat

In a (current) world where the MS/PC still dominates the information spectrum, it's my opinion that students need to learn these basic computer skills first.  :good

But what do I know, I'm old... :laugh

Niiiice!!  Been looking at that one myself... Direct from HP? I must have "built" oe online there a hundred times now!

My old Compaq has been around the wokd with me, still works great, no dead pixels, but the hinges are broken and I have it held together with duct tape and bailing wire.....literally!   :laugh

Still runs XP like a champ, but that OS's days are numbered as well......

Sandy Bridge processors are going to be released on the 20th, so I might as well wait and see what happens after that.....

The iPad is great for presentation work. Especially if you are in any type of design or visual business.

Ironically, a presentation done on one here landed us a big job from, guess who ? Hint: Starts with an A.

My two youngest want 'em bad, but I'm making them earn them.

First to get a 4.0 at the end of the year gets one. And I want to wait for the new version anyway... :D

Yep, I could....... But why?  It still works as it is, and I will just use that $$ towards the new computer......

UPDATE:  I upgraded the computer last night!  Ok, now its help together with duct tape, bailing wire AND rubber bands!!  :laugh

It's kind of a pride thing at this point.... I keep daring it to fail, but like an old crusty relative you don't like, it keeps hanging on for dear life...... :rotflmao

A friend of mine's daughter goes to a school that supplies laptops for them to do their work. Well she and and about 700 students got busted for acquiring a proxy to get them out of the main school system so they could get out to the good o'l WWW. Needles to say she got 3 day vacation for where she went. The school also discovered that over 97k tunes were down loaded illegally via this proxy.

As a tool to replace textbooks and aid in research, I can see the merit.  By the time a district approves a textbook, it's obsolete.  It is phenomenally wasteful...and have you picked up a textbook lately?  They're crap!  Plus there are never enough for all the kids.  Maybe a computer "textbook" would shave a few years off the approval process and have more accurate information...maybe not.  This is the public school system we're talking about. :rolleyes   But it might help keep eleventy gazillion textbooks out of landfills, at the very least.  As each generation becomes more computer/tech savvy, books become foreign objects to them.  Would an iPad make them want to study more?  Hard to say, but it might. Or they might get REALLY good at playing Angry Birds. :laugh  Heck, at the rate we keep laying off teachers, computers might as well be teaching the kids.

The research part is where it gets dicey.  How do you allow access to some sites and not others?  I know our computer lab computers were only supposed to let kids go to certain approved sites...and that was a complete joke.  I loved how they blocked gun websites, so all the kids were looking up knives! :laugh  As pointed out above, there's always going to be some kid who will figure out how to circumvent the system, and I'm sure he'd be willing to sell that information to his classmates. ;)

All that being said....I'd like one if anyone is feeling generous! :D  :fouet

The research part is where it gets dicey.  How do you allow access to some sites and not others?  I know our computer lab computers were only supposed to let kids go to certain approved sites...and that was a complete joke.  I loved how they blocked gun websites, so all the kids were looking up knives! :laugh  As pointed out above, there's always going to be some kid who will figure out how to circumvent the system, and I'm sure he'd be willing to sell that information to his classmates. ;)

All that being said....I'd like one if anyone is feeling generous! :D  :fouet
