While the details are still sketchy it sounds like the couple who lost their lives last week on Lake Havasu were in an Eliminator Deck Boat that was traveling 70 - 80 MPH when it went out of control and flipped.

Investigators are speculating the accident may have been caused by a mechanical failure.  

I'm not familiar with the Eliminator boats but I've owned boats with outdrives and I cannot think of any failure which would cause a boat to flip 4 - 5 times at 70 - 80 MPH.  Even if the steering controls failed wouldn't the boat simply continue forward?  

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might have happened?

It being an Elim is what I first heard too. Eye witnesses are saying it was a Cat and not a deck boat.

The Investigator not suppossed to be in Havi till next week. LE's on scene are guessing mechanical failure. they don't count.

Lots of mechanical problems can cause a sudden turn. If your doing 80 in your car and get a front left blow-out, guess what will happen.

3 eye-witnesses are saying the boat did not flip.

I'll jump of a cliff here, I'm guessing that he siezed a motor. BTW, the motors are from GT Performance.

As far as me thoughts, It's really sad that these things happen.

Waterdog - thanks for the information.

I agree it's sad these things happen.  My condolences to the friends and family of the accident victims.

Concerning the accident, I'm amazed how sketchy the details are - you'd think something as basic as the brand of boat and whether or not it flipped would be easy to figure out and report.  Like you, I've read some accounts indicating the boat flipped and others stating it didn't flip.

Concerning your theory, are you thinking the boat had dual outdrives/engines and one of the engines seized?  I never thought of that possibility but it could explain why the boat turned in one direction - the boat would turn in the direction of the seized engine.  

If that were a common problem you'd almost think the outdrive companies would build in a safety device like the auto-rotate feature on helicopters.  

Thanks again for the information - it will be interesting to hear what the investigator determines.

At that speed if the motor locked up without any shaft release of some kind, the prop will keep turning through the water and can/will turn a boat over, it went to the right because it's driven off the back of the motor which makes prop torque to the right...

Does anyone know if the boat had a single outdrive or dual outdrives?

One of the reports I read indicated the boat continued to run in circles on its own after the occupants were ejected.  If the boat only had a single outdrive that would seemingly rule out a seized engine.

Would a 24 foot boat have dual engines/outdrives?

According to the report the boat was a 34 foot Eliminator and it was being driven by one of the drowning victims.  The boat was reportedly going 50 MPH and it spun around four or five times.  (Spun as opposed to flipped.)  

I did some searching on the Internet and it seems like most Eliminator boats of that size have dual outdrives.

Def dual motors if it was a 36' Cat...a sad deal all around.  Interested to hear more as they find out what caused the accident.

Twins for sure, and if one locked up at full throttle that would spin the boat out in an split second, no time for anyone to react..

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (AP) — Western Arizona sheriff's officials say they recovered the bodies of an Illinois couple who were thrown from a boat on Lake Havasu Friday.

Mohave County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Trish Carter says the bodies of Michael and Brenda Bedeker, both 45, from Ottawa, Ill., were recovered about 200 yards offshore Sunday morning.

The Bedekers were on the lake with another couple from Illinois.

The Sheriff's Office says Robert and Lisa Snook, 37, resurfaced and swam back to the boat.

Carter says witnesses saw the boat make an erratic turn just before it rolled four or five times. Carter says investigators are looking at a malfunction on the boat as the possible cause of the crash.

LAKE HAVASO CITY, Ariz. — Three people were injured and a fourth rescued unhurt after their catamaran flipped over on the Colorado River upstream of Lake Havasu City.

Authorities credited the life jackets the four people were wearing with preventing any of them from drowning after the midday Saturday accident.

The four people were pulled from the water by other boaters. Lake Havasu City Fire Department battalion chief James Whitt says in a statement that the rescuers boat was met at a downstream dock by firefighters and paramedics.

The injured were taken to a hospital, one with head injuries, one with an injured back and one with chest injuries. No identities have been released.
