Hey Kids:
I hate to be a downer, but I think this one's important seeing that we all love going to the river in summer...
About 3 years ago a friend of ours (43 at the time) was diagnosed with brain cancer.  He loved being in the sun and was an avid jet skiier.  Previous to his diagnosis, he had a small mole on his face that he never had checked. ÂÂ
Well, that small mole apparently was the beginning stages of melanoma.  The melanoma eventually metastasized and turned into brain cancer.  He died last Saturday at the age of 46 from the only cancer that's 100% curable (melanoma) because he didn't get his moles checked.
I've had over 20 moles removed. Of those 20, 3 were actinic keratosis (meaning they were abnormal skin growths that were precancers) and I had to have a large area of skin removed - and stitches - to make sure they got all the abnormal cells out of my body.
I go in every 6 months now and every time they usually take off 3- 8 moles at a time.  I was an 80's baby who did nothing but baby oil at the beach in my late teens - and I'm paying for it now. ÂÂ
AND, another fact that's important - it's not the big, funky looking moles that the doctors are concerned about so much anymore...it's the little tiny black dots that are the size of a ball-point pen mark - those are the ones they keep taking off me!!!
Again, not to be a downer, but it's sad when someone dies so young from something that could have been totally treatable... GET YOUR MOLES CHECKED!
