On Tuesday Nov. 4th I signed a six year contract with the U.S. Navy Reserves and got sworn in.

I have my orders. I have to be at Terminal Island Long Beach at 0700 on Saturday 15th. This will be my first weekend of drills. I will be stationed at Long Beach for 4 to 6 months for school. Then I will meet up with my unit in Seal Beach, and this is where I will be stationed for the remainder of my enlistmentÃ¢â‚¬Â¦which is very nice because I will be close to home and I wonÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t have to stay over nite on the base. The reserves is one weekend at month and two weeks a year for annual trainingÃ¢â‚¬Â¦and that will be somewhere in the U.S. I am gonna be such a spazz this week.

IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m going in as a DC {Damage Controlman}Ã¢â‚¬Â¦.which is a firefighter. This is perfect for me with my civilian job being an EMT. My recruiter is also a DC..and says your golden if you can get a DC rating.

I will also have to go to Great Lakes, IL for basic training. Basic training in the reserves is only 17days, and I have up to a year to go. I plan on going after next semester and either before or after OP6 in June.

This is something IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ve always wanted to do and now is the perfect time for me. My family is very excited for me. I wouldnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t sign my contract unless I had full support from my daughter and my boyfriendÃ¢â‚¬Â¦they are the two most important people in my life.

I also plan on taking advantage of all the benefits I will be gettingÃ¢â‚¬Â¦especially the G.I. Bill. I donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t want student loans hanging over my head.

There is the possibility that I could get activated. My contract states that I canÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t get called for the first three years of my contract. This was comforting for Randy. Chances of me getting activated are slim, and the Navy is statistically the safest branch of service.

I wanted to share this with you allÃ¢â‚¬Â¦and some of you have been there for me since the beginning of this and I totally appreciate that.

Thanks guys...Yes Doug this is huge, but I feel like I made the right decision.

I got lucky to get my rating and get stationed at Seal Beach, because my second choice would have put me at the Naval Air Station in San Diego and I would have to stay there over nite. In the reserves if you live within 50 miles of your base you can go home at the end of the day.

He is Scott...how does he like it? All the men in my family served in the Army...My brother was gonna stay in as a reserve but they were sending his unit to Bosnia, so he got out.

He is a turbine mechanic now working for Pratt & Whitney. He makes bank thanks to the Army...He is using his G.I.Bill now and getting his B.A.

I am so happy for you. I know that Randy is very happy, because he gets to have is honey come home at night.

My 6 year old just saw the ship and said WOW mom. I told him I had a friend that was going to be on that ship. He said that is so cool. I thoought that was cute from him..

You and your family should be really proud! I am always impressed by people that join our armed forces. In my occupation I spend a lot of my time working with our military and get to know a lot of people from all branches. It always makes me feel good to know that our boys and girls are out there keeping us safe!

The navy must be a good gig, my father was a lifer. He retired after 20 +years. (last time I saw him was 16 years ago)
My cousin just signed up this year, and a friend of mine got out 2 years ago.

Being close to home is a major plus! I just hope that 1 weekend a month doesnt fall on river weekends, j/k
