So after all the hashing and rehashing, my Spyhunter keeps picking up a ton of Backweb parasites, I looked around and found that it is a ligit program in my Kodak software for updates. as read here Should I be concerned with Backweb and wack my auto-update Kodak? Or is their something else that can be recomended?

Well I've never experienced that one but from reading that article, it's just another spyware crap, I'd remove it!...Just my .02!.. :break

BTW, you update the program manually anyhow!..

Personally, the only thing I use Auto Update on is my AVG Virus scan, and even then, only the DAT files and not the program updates. Ã‚Â One of the problems with auto update is that it has to send info on your computer somewhere to see if you need an update anyways right? Ã‚Â I don't even use Microsoft Auto Update although Lord knows, there are so many updates for their screwed up OS's. Ã‚Â When I feel the need to update anything, based on info I've heard or read about that might be a threat to my computer security, then, at that point, I search for the correct updates and manually update.
As far as application updates, never had any use for them. Ã‚Â I mean, it takes umpteen amounts of time to figure out how to use a program good and efficently that I don't need a program "Update" to make it better (?) and spend all that time trying to figure out how to work it all over again. Ã‚Â I'd prefer the old cliche', "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". :good

Man I agree, I wish out IT people thought the same way. We get updates on most of our programs every couple months, full of bugs of course. It then takes a couple months to get all the bugs fixed, but by the time the programs are running right and everyone knows how to make the freakin' things work, guess what? Yep.... update. :beat

Another good fix for that is to download Zone Alarm (Thanks again for the tip Art).
Although I am fairly new to this program, I have worked with it extensively already and have found it to be an effective tool at stopping "process" such as spyware trying to send info OUT of your PC as well as it's a good little software firewall.

For my security on this PC I am on, I am using a Cisco Router, SMC Barricade Router, Zone Alarm, Spybot, and AVG Antivirus. I have had ABSOLUTELY NO breaches of security :good

Although the routers can be pricey :eek

all of the aforementioned software is available for free by downloading off of the internet.

You're welcome Jim, I've tried several Firewals but I haven't found one yet as good as ZoneAlarm!....Updaters, they do suck!

I usually remove them, you can always update manually!. :good

I would download Zone Alarm and run it. Ã‚Â A hardware firewall stops things from coming in without permission, but won't stop it from going out (at least not without advanced configuring).
Zone Alarm stops things from being sent out without your knowledge. Ã‚Â You'd be surprised at what goes on in there. Ã‚Â When I installed Zone Alarm, there were a few things that I saw that made me think "WTF is going on here".

Yep, I'd install Zone Alarm....

Cisco is much more configureable for higher security settings. The SMC Barricade is an 8 Port Broadband Router with a printer port. Since my Broadband connection is PPPOE, I use the SMC for the little stuff to deal with the PPPOE and the network printing, and the other router for more in depth stuff

Your basic "off the shelf" Broadband routers such as Linksys, SMC, etc, are basically just a router to deal with the sharing of a broadband connection, and although they do provide NAT, they do not allow configuration such as redirection and port blocking.....

Keep in mind that I have 5 kids here that all have their own computers on the same network. Kids like to do stuff on computers that is not very good security wise so with a Cisco router, I can configure it to block certain PC's on the network from going to certain places via specific ports. Hence making the overall security of the entire network better.
You'd be shocked at all of the BS that some of these sites that the kids go to do to your PC.
