Personally, the only thing I use Auto Update on is my AVG Virus scan, and even then, only the DAT files and not the program updates.  One of the problems with auto update is that it has to send info on your computer somewhere to see if you need an update anyways right?  I don't even use Microsoft Auto Update although Lord knows, there are so many updates for their screwed up OS's.  When I feel the need to update anything, based on info I've heard or read about that might be a threat to my computer security, then, at that point, I search for the correct updates and manually update. As far as application updates, never had any use for them.  I mean, it takes umpteen amounts of time to figure out how to use a program good and efficently that I don't need a program "Update" to make it better (?) and spend all that time trying to figure out how to work it all over again.  I'd prefer the old cliche', "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
