Was privileged to see an SR-71 up close and witness a couple of fly-bys at March Airfield several years ago. Awesome machine. The last fly-by was no more than maybe 200 off the ground and once he was past the field, he kicked in the afterburners and was gone before you could say "Where'd he go?" :good

A few years ago I got the opportunity to talk with a Blackbird pilot at a Nellis AFB airshow.

He was an AF Colonel who mentioned his bird was one of four brought out of mothball and assigned to NASA.

I thought I'd be coy and ask, "How fast does it REALLY go?"

He chuckled and said, "It's still classified and if I told you, I'd have to kill you." ;) He then said the main reason it's classified is so the bad guys can't get a missle lock on him.

Funny thing was, for an "old" plane :plane  brought out of retirement, there sure were plenty of guards holding loaded M-16s :guns  standing around the plane's perimeter. :rotflmao

The airplane would be radical today, but the Skunk Works designed and built the thing in 30 months using slide rules and draft boards.   :eek They pioneered technology and manufacturing techniques, literally bought the materials to make it from Russia (through the CIA of course).  This was all done by 1 company, under budget and on time.  The CIA payed Kelly Johnson personally, with checks, to build the airplane.  Try that today.  :D

Actually, an airplane like that couldn't be built today, the bureaucracy alone would doom it to a still birth 20 years from now...

Ahhh The good ole days, Kelly Johnson is one of my idols, the guy was just phenomonal, The Skunk works and all they did and without the use of what we have today, is so incredible, i saw a flyby for the workers out at BLDG 360 @ BUR and they did three passes i still to this day get goose bumps remembering that day , full burners passes, and i was less than 75ft from the runway. Just awesome!!!
