The California Supreme Court on Thursday voided the nearly 4,000 same-sex marriages sanctioned in San Francisco this year and ruled unanimously that the mayor overstepped his authority by issuing licenses to gay and lesbian couples.

The court said the city's decision to issue the licenses and perform the ceremonies violated a 1977 state law that defines marriage as a union between a man and woman.

The justices separately decided with a 5-2 vote to nullify the 3,995 marriages performed between Feb. 12 and March 11, when the court halted the weddings.

I always thought marriage was between members of the opposite sex anyway.  I'm sure some are upset by this ruling though.  At least they can still love each other. :)

Glad that they voided the marriages :good   In today's news, the NJ Governor resigned after having an affair with a GUY  (he's married to a woman) and finding out that he's Gay.  SO he resigned today suddenly.  I wonder if he'll be getting a divorce also :rolleyes

However, What I'm more concerned with is what are they doing with the judge that broke the law by preforming the marriages? Will he be punished?  :stupid He ought to be  :flamed  regardless of our personal feelings on gay marriages. This is what confuses me.  The first posts indicates the Mayor of SF issued the marriage licenses.  I didn't know that was their job in the first place?

I guess things are different in Orange County, because the county issues the licenses as opposed to mayors of cities.

What did everyone expect anyways from the Mayor of the Gay Bay area to do?  I'm surprised they didn't try doing that a long time ago.  Where's that big earthquake that we need to separate the Gay Bay Area from the rest of the state?
