Davis Dam water release reduced further

BULLHEAD CITY - Releases into the Colorado River from Davis Dam were reduced even further Wednesday afternoon.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation cut back releases from an already heavily reduced 2,000 cubic fee per second to less than 1,500 cubic feet per second for part of the day in order to determine the level at which the Mohave Generating Station can no longer divert water from the river
Water flow was lowered for the third time this year beginning Tuesday because of recent storms and an inflow into Lake Havasu from the Bill Williams and Gila rivers.
Reductions are expected to last until mid-March, said Robert Walsh, bureau spokesman for the lower Colorado River area.
"The demand is going to depend on when it stops raining and dries out so that the water users need water from the Colorado River," he said.
The output was lowered to prevent reservoir overflow because wet conditions have caused Lake Havasu to rise to within six inches of its maximum elevation, Walsh said. Any water that flows over the reservoir would be considered lost to the Colorado River system, he added.
"It's a big deal if you're trying to conserve water for future use," he said.
Releases may have to be cut even further depending on future inflows and water demand.
Typical water flows are more than six times the amount being released now.
