OK guys, I got a question for you. What happens to all the older high end boats? Where do they go? I remember back when the Sleek Craft in Carrera Elite's avatar was all the rage. All the high rollors had one. Now it's the Elliminator 1/4 canopy, etc. You don't see any of those old Sleek Crafts, (insert brand here), etc. Not any, ever. Where did they go? I searched the boat trader and hot boat for them. They're gone. Not that I really want one but those high end boats disappear after about 10 years. Are the people buying these boats keeping them for 10 years until they go out of style and sinking them? Collect insurance money and start all over. I personaly can't see spending $250,000+ on a boat. Then having a $2500/month payment on a 20 year old boat. Anyone got any thought here or know anyone that owns a high dollar boat? Ask them for me.

I see them quite a bit.  They just don't draw the attention that they used to back in the day.

That, and most people don't use their boats a whole lot.  One or two trips is alot for most boaters.  Lots of those boats are sitting in a storage shed, or in a lot somewhere.  

Give it another couple years and those early off shore boats will start being vintage.  Vintage is cool and they'll begin to get rescued.

A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his.

That's kind of what I was thinking. To find an old boat that needs to be gone through complete. They should be dirt cheap by now and in need of repair. I just haven't seen one in years. Of course I spend more of my time at Havasu (show-off capitol of the boat world).

On the other hand, I was just telling my wife I miss my old 18' jet and would like to maybe find an old v-drive BB boat to go through. I see they still pull about 15K for one in good shape. They're still only good for first thing in the morning but, they were fun and would be a nice second boat for the right price.

Many of them have been bought by nuevo rich, casual lake boaters, who seldom use them. For the past several months, there has been a twin engine 80's or perhaps early 90's offshore rig for sale in a storage lot on ave L in Lancaster. I think soon, a lot of them will be sold for reasonable prices to more serious boaters and wind up on the ocean (where they belong ;) ). ;)  ;)

My antique is a '90 Carrera 23.5 Classic. There are still some around for sale. If you look around , you can find the Nordics, Sleeks, ect. for sale, but there doesn't seem to be that many of them.......

What's sad is to go by a storage yard and see these nice, or one nice, boats just baking away.  What I would give to get my hands on some of them.

You talk to the people that run the storage facility and they won't give you any info, other than "they pay their rent, but nobody comes around to check on 'em"..... :rolleyes

It's sad to see these things rot away. A friend of mine had the 70's pimp ride :fouet . A Sleek day cruiser. He offered to sell it to me for $3000 about 10 years ago. I remember it being a bitchin boat. So, I drive out to Bullhead to see it where it been stored. It looked like it had been sitting in a field for 5 years without a cover. I needed everything, interior, gel coat, cables, steering wheel. I was like, "you'd have to pay me to take that thing". To find an old Nordic, Scarab, Sleek, etc. that needed a full restore would be okay if you could score it for next to nothing. Then dump all the money it needed into it and have a bitchin retro boat. You see the old 17'-19' jets, v-drives, etc and slightly newer sterndrive bow riders but, I just don't see many of the big boats the seamed to rule the late 80's. By the way, sweet ride Carrera :good . Those are the exact boats I never seem to see anymore.

It's the ones kept INSIDE that are the best kept secrets...the place I keep my boat has some great boats tucked away indoors, rarely used, but like Shue says,"They pay". ;)

They end up either in some rednecks back 40 (like mine) baking and collecting dirt or out in the desert somewhere on some property and same thing.  

I can't see paying storage for something like that.  What a waste of 100+ a month if you're not using it.  

Although, you wouldn't believe the amount of folks who have trailers in our park and NEVER go there.  Some have not been there in 3 years and continue to pay the rental and utilities.  Why would someone do that?? I'd rather put that $$ in a mutual fund or something rather than give it to the feds.

We kind of lucked out on our place. We don't have a ton of money (of course who does we all live to what we make). We were spending a ton of money a couple of times per year to pull the boat or skis down to Crazy Horse and rent a trailer. We herd about Golden Shores and went to check out buying a little trailer or lot. As it turns out we hooked up with a lender that had a brand new mfg home for sale. She was able to get us financed on the deal with 20% down. We tapped our home for a 2nd to make the down and our payments on the river pad are about $800/month. About half of what we would spend for a week at Crazy Horse. Now we leave the boat, skis, and tow vehicle down there. It cost us $30-$35 to drive down and back in our Honda Civic. Plus, the place is nicer than our house. At the start we were going to try to rent the place a few weeks per year but with it being new we don't want it thrashed. So, we keep a tight budget and go down as we can afford it. About twice a month during the summer. So for about the price of a new truck payment I'll make do with some old cars for a while to have a place .8 miles from water and 5 miles from a launch ramp. Just got to watch my nickles and dimes for a few years. It helps at tax time too. Take a look around down there. I know a guy that has a brand new mobile and 24X34 garage down there in a fully fenced yard for sale at $165,000.

I was watching lot prices in Golden Shores a few years back when Havi got to expensive for my budget.

They were under $10k 3-4 years ago, then it exploded.  Some investor came in and bought up everything... :eek   They went to $14k within 6 months and last year Pat was selling them for $30k.... :rolleyes   Woulda, shouda, coulda

Nice move on getting a place.  It will pay dividends well into the future.  I've been watching Willow Valley for a good deal as well, but a nice place will run you $150k or more.

I'll def. have to cruise through the nieghborhood and give it a reall look-see with the wife.  $165k for a brand new unit w/garage is not all that bad.

That's sure what I had in my head too. I can see people financing them with a balloon payment knowing they'll never see the last payment. I'm pretty sure a few of them get stolen  ;)  only to be recovered minus drives and engines and claimed a total loss. I don't think I could do it but, I think it may be happening none the less. A boat is a terrible investment and the investment is huge for the high end boats. I just can't picture someone with enough funds to buy a boat of this caliber loosing $400,000 in depreciation over 10 years or so.

We've got enough fish habitat down there now.  We've put some interesting stuff in Saguaro over the years for dive training.  A bus, two helicopters, two boats, a couple cars.  Yesterday I added a pair of Oakleys for some small fish habitat, for the cool fish.

Here is a pic of a couple of older boats. One on the left is a early 90's sleek 25 and the one on the right is my 91 carrera 27'. I know what you mean though. I have often wondered what happend to a lot of the nice older cat's. You dont see many of them around.

I work in peoples yards all day, and see a lot of old boats less engines  with weeds growing out of them :cry I mean a lot maybe two a week some are old classics worth a look at saving. Others are just low buget boats.  some broke, some others there lives got busy and quit using. :cry  either way it's a shame :cry  :cry

Actually, Oakley is pretty cool and they give law enforcement a 50% discount.  Time to place and order.
