One person missing after accident near Sandbar

Personnel from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, Lake Havasu City Fire Department and Lake Havasu City Police Department help take one of the victims of Saturday's boat accident on Lake Havasu to a waiting ambulance at Lake Havasu State Park Windsor Beach.  
A collision between at least two boats south of the Sandbar Saturday afternoon resulted in 13 injures.

The whereabouts of one person involved in the crash was still unknown Saturday night.

The accident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. three of the victims suffered serious head injuries, according to Lake Havasu City Fire Department Battalion Chief James Whitt.

One of the boats involved carried 14 teachers from Phoenix, Whitt said.

One of the injured was in critical condition; two others were listed as serious, according to Whitt.

Rescue crews transported the victims from the Sandbar area to Lake Havasu State Park Windsor Beach, where they were taken to Havasu Regional Medical Center.

It was not known late Saturday how the accident happened.

At Windsor, paramedics treated two leg fractures, an abdominal injury and an assortment of bumps, bruises and minor lacerations. At least three people involved were not injured, Whitt said.

Dive teams from San Bernardino, Calif., and Mohave County called off the search for the missing person around 7:10 p.m. because of darkness. The search will resume this morning.

Officers from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, Lake Havasu City Fire Department, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office and Lake Havasu City Fire Department were involved in rescue efforts, as well as personnel from River Medical.

Narrow stretch of water, 100's of boats going different speeds, late afternoon on a Saturday...
Not uncommon to see 3'-4' swells from all the boat traffic.  :eek

It's not just Havasu.... there are many others......


The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is investigating a boating accident that has left one person dead and another seriously injured.

Authorities found the boat just after 7:00 a.m. Friday near Sand Harbor.

Investigators say the two on the boat were either coming ashore or speeding near the shore at about midnight Friday morning when their boat hit a rock and launched about ten feet before crashing into a pile of boulders in the water.

A Washoe County Sheriff's deputy patrolling the area spotted the crash site nearly seven hours later.  He climbed onto the boat where he found an injured man slipping in and out of consciousness.  The victim told the officer that his friend was thrown overboard.  

The other man's body was found about 20 feet from the boat.  Investigators don't know if the man drowned or was killed on impact when the boat crashed.

The injured man was taken to Washoe Medical Center with a broken leg and possible head injuries.  He is identified as Raymond Bernardoni of Incline Village.  Bernardoni was listed in serious but stable condition Friday night at Washoe Med.

Prominent Waco banker Clyde Martin, a community leader and avid outdoorsman, was killed Friday morning in a boating accident near the Texas Gulf Coast city of Rockport.

Martin, 55, president of First National Bank of Central Texas, was fishing with a friend near Aransas Bay when he fell from the boat and was struck by the propeller.

Rescuers responded to the scene, but Martin was pronounced dead a short time later, authorities said.

Martin’s death came as a shock to his friends and colleagues in Waco. As word of his death spread Friday, they took solace knowing that Martin died doing something he loved.

Waco general contractor John Erwin, Martin’s best friend, was scheduled to accompany Martin on the Rockport trip, as he had done many times in the past, until a last-minute conflict prevented him from going.

Erwin and Martin, former neighbors who had known each other since the mid-70s, are former chairmen of the Heart O’ Texas Fair and Rodeo board of directors and are on the board at Martin’s bank.

“He was a friend to everyone,” Erwin said, choking back his grief. “He had a tough exterior, but he was very gentle and had a very tender side. He was one of the most compassionate persons you would ever hope to meet.”

The accident happened about 8:30 a.m. when the 23-foot-long boat in which Martin was riding turned to enter Aransas Bay from the Intercoastal Waterway, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game warden Brandi Reeder said.

As the boat turned, Martin attempted to stand up and was thrown overboard and struck by the propeller. Reeder said a friend of Martin’s pulled him from the water and attempted to resuscitate him until rescuers arrived.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ A Warrensburg man died at Albany Medical Center after suffering injuries from a boat accident on Lake George.

Ryan D. Winslow, 24, was piloting a 21-foot Tige ski boat when it collided with an elevated diving board near the shore, police said.

Of the three other people on board, only one passenger suffered minor injuries.

Winslow, an experienced boater, had been drinking alcohol with his friends when the boat collided with the swimming platform, state police said.

The experienced boater was on life support until he died Monday.

CBS) LOS ANGELES A man who allegedly drove a boat while drunk was charged Wednesday in connection with a fatal Memorial Day accident at Pyramid Lake.

John Galvan, 46, was charged with one count of vessel manslaughter with alcohol and was scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in San Fernando Superior Court.

Authorities say Galvan was piloting the boat and towing a large inner tube carrying the victim, Edward Gomez. Galvan swerved to avoid hitting another boat and the tube carrying Gomez crashed head-on into the hull of the other boat, officials said.

Gomez was pronounced dead at Henry Mayo Hospital.

Pyramid Lake is about 20 miles north of Valencia.

EDOUARD MICHELIN, head of the iconic French tyremaker Michelin, died in a boating accident on Friday, leaving the company in the hands of a non-family member for the first time.
The death of 43-year-old Michelin, the fourth-generation of the family to run the firm, could spark an identity crisis at one of France’s most prestigious and successful companies.



Michel Rollier, 62, who served as joint managing partner with Edouard Michelin, will now take over in order to “assure the continuity of the company’s management”, according to a press release.

The accident took place near Ile de Sein, off the coast of Brittany. The tyre magnate had been aboard a fishing boat that sank without explanation. It had been a foggy day but the sea was calm.

Since two Michelin brothers started the tyremaker in 1889 at a factory that made farm machinery and rubber balls, the reins have always stayed in the family. Edouard was the great-grandson of one founding brother and took over from his father in 1999.

The Michelin family is still thought to own about one-third of the shares in the company, which it controls through a limited-partnership management structure.

Edouard took the helm after running the North American operations. He swiftly cut 7,500 jobs, including nearly 2,000 in France, sparking a backlash. But he did spearhead a number of product innovations, including a prototype metal tyre.

The company is also behind the restaurant star system and a series of travel guides. In 2005, Michelin posted a 38% rise in profit to €889m on sales €15.6 billion.

Two people were killed in a boating accident Sunday evening on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River.

Morgan Wees, 19, of Omaha and Colton Peterson, 20, of Blair, Neb., were killed in the accident in Burt County near mile marker 662, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reported.

Wees and Peterson were aboard a boat that apparently collided with a barge sometime after 8:30 p.m. Sunday, the commission reported. It stated that the barge was tied to shore at the time of the accident.


Authorities reported being notified Monday morning after the boat was seen partially submerged next to the barge. It is believed that the victims were enroute to Harbor 671, a group of cabins north of the accident scene, the commission reported

A boy who was the captain of the boat that allegedly killed 6-year-old boy snorkeling near Key West this weekend is being charged with vessel homicide.

Police turned over 13-year-old Christopher J. Ruiz to juvenile detention officials and charged him with vessel homicide. He has also been charged with failing to report the accident and failure to remain on scene. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission say the 6-year-old victim was snorkeling off Key West with his father and a sibling next to their 22-foot motorboat when he was struck.

A neighbor who spoke to CBS4's Carey Codd in anonymity said she was surprised that the 13-year-old would even think of running off from an accident scene, as he is never in trouble. Ruiz also had his Florida Boating Safety Education I.D. Card, which is the equivalent of a driver's license for boaters. There is no age minimum to receive your ID card as long as you pass an exam. The neighbor said he had knowledge of boating, despite his age.

The passing 18-foot skiff first sped over the boy, then crashed into his father's vessel, causing it to sink. The driver paused momentarily before taking off. The 6-year-old victim, Charlie Smith, was killed on impact. The impact of the crash ripped the fiberglass down the middle section of the boat.

Authorities found the skiff tied to a dock at a Key Haven home and arrested the suspect.

The victim was pronounced dead at Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island.

Authorities say another teen aboard the skiff was also injured in the wreck. That teen checked into the emergency room at Lower Keys Medical Center, where staff noticed his injuries and alerted investigators.

Two are dead after a boat slammed into two docks near the Ortega and Cedar Rivers.

The crash happened late Sunday night near the mouth of the Cedar River where it meets the Ortega.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials say 26-year-old Charles Streat of Jacksonville hit a dock, throwing his 28-year-old passenger off the boat. The passenger, who was from Virginia, was killed.

Streat then hit another dock and wedged under a boat lift. He was also killed.

Another passenger from Virginia is now in critical condition. Investigators are still figuring out what went wrong.

We've had our share of deathes here in Texas so far. Pretty depressing. We lost a couple of attendees last weekend at the Harley Rally also. It just makes me think about my hobbies, boating and biking. Not that I would ever give them up, just keeps your head in the right place.

I had a co-worker come up to me and started talking about the accedent with the teachers.  Her son goes to the school. The info she got was scetchy on what happened.  She also told me that one of the teachers is in Vegas in a coma.

Another update from justsaynews.  The missing person was the owner of the boat, not the driver:

Boat Driver In Fatal Accident
LAKE HAVASU CITY, AZ - One of the drivers in last Saturday’s boat collision on the Colorado River just north of Lake Havasu, is 43-year-old Shetal Walters, owner of the Desert Garden Montessori School in Ahwatukee. He had 15 of his teachers on board and many were injured. Fifty-four-year old David Ramsey, Sr. of Riverside, California was a passenger in the other boat. He is missing and presumed drowned. His son, David, was driving. Both Ramsey, Jr. and Walters have been tested for possible OUI violations. Mohave County Sheriff's Office investigators say a preliminary investigation indicates that the two boats may have been traveling too fast and that alcohol may have been a factor. The two most seriously injured of the teachers were Heather Storck, 35, who was still in critical condition yesterday at UMC, and Janelle Smith, 24, who has been upgraded to good condition.

I'd probably stay off the water until they find the body.... :eek

Good call on staying off the water.  I won't go into details from past incidents, but lets just say I've had a couple people find some surprises.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning kills boaters.  Take the time to learn about it and how to avoid it.
