Has anyone changed the way you drive? What you drive? How much?

I drive a county vehicle so it doesn't affect me too much, I only drive my personal vehicle less than 5000 miles per year.  The lakes around here, Saguaro in particular, has been especially slow this year and I think the price of gas is a big part of it.  I know this has been discussed before, but I'm curious if anyone made any changes or if we've all just accepted it and go about things the same as when it was $1.50 a gallon.  My wife works about 30 miles away and takes a van pool 4 days a week.  She still has to drive about 10 miles, but it cuts down on the gas and mileage on the car.  Her company pays most of the cost, I think it costs her about 15 bucks a month.  

The last time I filled up going to the lake, it was $100 between the boat and truck. :eek  And my boat is small.  I see much less of the big boats cruising around the lake these days.

Cost of fuel has def. changed our boating season.

Two years ago, we were going at least twice a month, three week-long trips to Havasu, some long week-ends to Blythe, one day local lake runs, etc.  This year, the boat has been on the water a total of 4 days..... :cry

You could basically budget $100/day as a "rule-of-thumb" for a trip.  Now, it's $300/day.... :eek  Wages have not kept up with the cost of recreation, let alone the cost of living.  You end up staying home or doing something locally versus making the run to the river.....really sad..... :(

We use the company car more versus the F-150....we bought a 4-banger truck for the kid, which the wife drives to work and back.  Lots of "big baller" boats for sale, people wanting to downsize.  Everyone I've talked to/read about says "yes", it's slower at the river/lakes this season.

As consumers, we have yet to feel the total impact of rising fuel costs, but it's coming....the "signs" are there, shades of the down-turn in the '70s.

Hold on to your wallet and ride it out.... :cool

My wife and I both seemed to observe the same phenom at the lake last week...............less big boats running up/down, more mid-20'ers.....

I've heard some of our guys out at Lake Pleasant that they've talked to alot of people there that normally go to Havasu, but are at Pleasant because of the price of gas.

Here's my other question, this one for the professional drivers (truck).  Most of you guys here are in company rigs, don't worry so much about the fuel, but how are the independents getting by.  I have to believe its cutting into profits, or are we all going to pay down the road, so to speak.

well, since I crashed my economy car, I'm having to drive the truck....It takes about $65-$75 to fill the truck and about $35-$45 to fill the car.....So I have been driving a little less.....

My older sister and her husband run an independent.  It hasn't hurt them like they thought it would.  With the shortage of trucks out there, the prices on loads have gone up, because no one will take it if it won't pay out.

What's killin' their business is the driving hour restrictions.... :beat   The dead time on the side of the road is hurting their bottom line the most....

It also seems like there are many more PWC's on the water / on the road than boats as well.... :stupid

I'm glad to see the move "back" to smaller boats, especially on the river.  It ain't gettin' any wider, but the boats sure have gotten alot bigger over the years.... :eek

Im not a truck driver but I arrange LTL and Full Truck loads every day.. And the cost of shipping 12' of deck and 23,000lbs from Minnesota to SOCAL in the last year and a half has gone from $1,787 to the quote yesturday of $3,185.00...  And thats across the board... Freight prices have jumped significantly...

Here's my observations as someone who drives 650 miles per day;

The way people drive hasn't changed one bit as far as keeping their right foot off the gas pedal. I still see the exact same amount of SUVs and fullsize pickups billowing out black smoke as they get on the freeway, running along at 80 mph plus, whipping in and out of traffic and standing on the gas to get around the next car ahead. :stupid

What I have not seen this year are motorhomes. The last couple weeks there has been a huge mess of people towing boats however and most of them are hauling ass as if gas were 50 cents per gallon. :rolleyes

Independent truckers are not as effected by high diesel prices as one would thing because a few years back the Feds authorized a fuel surcharge that is charged to the shipper or consignee and passed straight through to the truck owner. Even though the freight rates are still shit, with the fuel surcharge in place it actually only costs the independent truckers about $1.50 per gallon when they receive payment on the load.

I see that on several weigh bills I get.........Even small companies that do on-site work I've seen add a fuel surcharge to the 'travel to jobsite'  charge.

I have a question.


We have payed the service techs   $0.39 a mile for their expenses, and we pay for oil changes and tires.  But right now that is starting to barely cover gas...  So I have been giving them the surcharge too...


What do you guys get for mileage????

Our 3rd Party in-store service vendors are billing at $.47 - $.48 per mile for passenger & light duty vehicles...

A year ago my knack for great timing showed it'self, in that I purchased a home a little over 50 mi from my work. Now my wife and I each commute over 100 miles a day. It hurts.  :(
As for our boating, we still go on overnight multi day trips. But, since my tow vehicle is a 25 ft RV, day trips (esp on weekends) just arn't worth the money or hassle.

Gas prices haven't bothered me to much. Homested issues have kept the boat from any kind of water way so far this year.  :cry   :banghead   :guns   :angry

I filled up today, my once a month fill-up, and saw something funny.  A couple high-school age kids come in, empty their pockets inside at the register and come up with $3.27 in change between them.  So they get a little over a gallon for the POS they're driving.  Then the kid does a burnout through the parking lot and onto the street.  That old truck probably burned half that gas right there.
