BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. A Tennessee grand jury has indicted the operator of a boat allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision on Boone Lake this summer.
The three-count indictment charges Wray West Chaffin The Second with criminally negligent homicide, negligent boating and failure to render aid in a boating accident. Chaffin is a Sullivan County resident and Gate City, Virginia, dentist.
Authorities say 63-year-old Wayne Allen Cross, of Bristol, and James E- Clark were aboard Clark's pontoon boat in June on the lake when it collided with Chaffin's Mastercraft boat, killing Cross and injuring Clark.
Chaffin's boat allegedly fled the scene and was spotted later the same day on the lake by Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officers. They stopped Chaffin's boat after noticing damage to the vessel. Officials then impounded the boat to investigate it.
If convicted, Chaffin faces up to two years on the negligent homicide charge, up to a year in jail on the negligent boating charge, and no more than 30 days for failing to render aid.
Chaffin's arraignment is scheduled for November 3rd.
