Thanks to everyone for the success of this board. It's been much more successful than I ever imagined!

It's been so successful that my bandwidth has reached is limits on this server. Therefore, I need to move it to another server that can handle the traffic. It will continue to be hosted by JNJHost though. In order to protect the integrity of the threads, at some point in the near future, I will have to temporarily shut down the board. I hate to do that, but there's no way around it. I'm not sure exactly when this will happen yet as I need to work with my host to make the transfer. The address will NOT change though. Any bookmarks using names as opposed to IP addresses should continue to work after the transfer. I will keep you posted with any news.

Usually when you move a website, it is unnoticable to anyone. You basically duplicate it on the new server and make the DNS change to let the net know that the site name is really a specific IP address. This doesn't happen instantly. It happens over the course of up to a day. While some are directed to the new site before others, if it is only a copy, no one notices. The problem with moving a message board though is one person may be posting on a thread on the new server, while someone else is still posting on the same thread on the old server. That's why it's important to shut it down to protect the integrity of the threads. I can move my main website with no problems. It actually came to this server only about 6 months ago and looked identical to the site on the old server. I will have expert help in moving the message board though. Any problems that occur should be fixable because everything is backed up. I'm not anticipating any problems though. I just wanted to let everyone know what was happening.

Having more server space and bandwidth will be a plus. The change shouldn't be visible to anyone though. Worst case scenario is I temporarily lose some of the "hacks" I added to this board. The database and skin shouldn't be affected though. The "hacks" can be reintroduced as well.

Well, I did just reply to this topic with a long explanation and suggestions on how to do it faster and cheaper with NO DOWNTIME, but....since I wasn't logged in, I lost it all. :confused

Rather than reposting what I just posted (and lost) let me just say this. I don't understand why these boards keep going down. Why switch servers? Why not run your own webserver? Why pay someone else to do it for ya? It is really fairly simple once it's up and running.......What happened to good old-fashioned REDUNDANCY?

Curious about your email. Ã‚Â Do you host your own server? Ã‚Â I'd be interested in how.

I have several servers on a huge network. Ã‚Â I resell bandwidth but own the servers. Ã‚Â My cost is low. Ã‚Â My bandwidth is pretty much unlimited but costly over limits.

I have set up a Win2k server at my home and can host any number of sites on it, however, the bandwidth (DSL) is not great. Ã‚Â Downloading is wonderful, Uploading is VERY limited, which is what you do from the server every time you access any site. Ã‚Â Cable is no better. Ã‚Â Sometimes greater downloads, same limited uploads.

You can pay much more for for higher upload speeds but it is expensive for the general user. Ã‚Â Do you have an inexpensive service? Ã‚Â I am looking for one!!

By the way, the move had no downtime whatsoever, and actually kicked in earlier than even I expected. Ã‚Â Please contact either myself or Doug if you find any issues whatsoever.

Great site Doug! Ã‚Â There are very few of value these days.
