The Vinegar 1/2 n 1/2 with water works very well, better than some actual water spot removers like Ducky - although Ducky works pretty good.
For really nasty spots, I spray it on real wet, then rub the area with my bare fingers to really wet out the area. I will leave for several minutes, then wipe off. I re-apply as needed.
But, you should make sure you atleast put a spray wax on after to help the boat resist water spotting.
I am very anal about my boat - a $5000 Dick Vale paint job will do that to you - here is my annual routine:
Good hand wax (McGuires Boat wax works well, but there many others) atleast twice a year.
Wipe off boat when pulled out of the water as quickly as possible and I use the synthetic chammois.
I spray wax after (Eagle Wet works well but there are many others) every 2 or 3 boat uses - as needed.
Use the 50/50 vinegar/water solution as needed and immediately follow with spray or hand wax. Hand wax is best as the vinegar takes almost all the old wax off.
If the boat is in the water all day - I wipe off with synthetic chammois as needed.
If the water spots have pitted your gel coat, you may need to buff out with rubbing compound, or in worse cases, you may need to color sand. My boat has a polyurethane coating on it, so it resists permenant spotting very well. I know, I can't color sand like the gel coat boys, but the great thing about that is that it never needs it .
