Congrats to my friend Earl. :jumpie
Well finally, I helped my friend who's house burned down last October move into his new place Friday night.
FEMA was a nightmare for him. At first things went quick with them, the initial cash they gave him to get some clothing and daily needs. They assessed his home and granted a FEMA loan @ 3% to find a replacement home.
His old home was uninsured but paid off(mobile home).

He found and negotiated a deal for a new place within the limits provided by FEMA back in November, with a escrow closing date of Dec. 30th.
Then excuse after excuse came as to why the loan hadn't been processed and funds transfered to escrow, making my buddy jump through hoops to keep his deal alive(seller wanted to back out due to delay)......
After multiple setbacks and delays he finally got his keys last Wednesday and we moved a bunch stuff in Friday. Many people had been storing things we were giving him for months. He lost everything in the fire except his truck and the clothes he wore to work that day. The only thing he found in the rubble was the heads of his golf clubs.

He's finally a happy camper. Any available ladies want to join him in his new Hot Tub?  :D

Having been thru the fire thing a couple times in my life, as well as the flood issues up here, I do often ponder what I deem "important".  Sure I love all my stuff, but some is definitely priceless..such as photos, drawings from my niece and nephew, some trinkets and oddly enough, some of my Christmas ornaments that are very special to me.  I can't imagine losing everything. :(  

My heart goes out to all the fire victims.  I sure hope they all had friends like you, Ziggy.  We've never met, but from what I can tell here on the boards, you really do have a heart of gold. :)  :good

Thanks CaliKitty ;)  Your posts indicate a warm and caring person as well. I've enjoyed reading your posts here.
Earl is a sports nuts, the most precious things to him he lost was some unreplaceable sports memorbilia...think he had a '78 Yankees team-signed baseball and plenty of Charger and Padre stuff.

The one thing that has made me laugh though has been seeing him in new clothes, his wardrobe is new and improved.  ;)

I'm sorry Earl lost that memorabilia.  It's easy for others to say "it's just stuff, you still have your life", but "stuff" has meaning to us.  Sure we can go on without it...but it leaves an empty spot in our lives.

After graduating from college a sorority sister moved all her stuff home to her parents house to get ready for her wedding.  A couple of months before the wedding they lost the house in one of the horrific Santa Barbara fires.  Mom and Dad literally ran for their lives, dropping the bureau drawer full of pictures in the doorway because it was too heavy and the fire was on top of them.  Lexy lost everything.  While we couldn't replace family photos we were able to make her new albums from her college years using copies of pictures we all had.  This was before the age of digital cameras and scanners, so many of the pictures were just color photocopies.  But it meant the world to her to get at least that little portion of her life back.  It took very little effort on our parts, but had a profound impact on her.  I was really glad we all pulled together and did it.  Gestures like that and your support of Earl really can make the difference when getting through such a devastating event.
