So we just sold my husbands F-150 yesterday :jumpie  (poor thing is headed for a rough life in Mexico- yikes!;).  Besides the fact that the F-150 was getting too old, our main reason for getting rid of it was that it was useless for towing our toys.  It was strong enough to pull the pontoon, as that doesn't actually weigh that much, but we never did because it just strained it too much.  Pulling the 34' Tailgator 5th wheel was never, ever an option.  

We want a 2500 HD and have found several trucks that we like, both new and used.  The two used ones we are looking at have a 6" and an 8" lift.  My question is this:  If we get a truck with a significant lift does that affect our ability to tow our 5th wheel?  It seems to me that by lifting the front of the trailer the back end subsequently drops down and risks bottoming out.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Hubby seems to think that we would have to get the trailer lifted.  I'm sure that I have seen some people with that, but surely not everyone who has a lifted truck and a trailer has had to get the trailer lifted....  

Any input would be helpful!!!

I would Think That The Trailer Would Have To Be Lifted So That It Would Tow Level. My Thought Is, By Lifting The Trailer, It Would Also Lift The Center Of Gravity, Which Could Make It Interesting While Towing In The Wind....

The trailer should be lifted also, if not there will be more weight on the rear axle which will also make for pour handling and more ware on the rear tires than the front. The weight is not dispersed evenly like it should be!

Never could figure out the infatuation with lifted trucks... :stupid  :beat

If you are towing a 5th wheel, use a standard sized truck, lifting causes a lot of issues that manufactures will warn you about, if you lift the trailer, center of gravity becomes and issue... plus it looks plain stupid....just my 2 coppers... :phone

Real motors are Hemis and Chevys, Fords dont count!

Typically you flip the axles on the Toyhauler.

On the way home from Ocotillo we saw a lifted F350 with a fiver that had the axles flipped. Towed pretty level, but it sure does look a bit hinky so high up there.

I prefer to keep it a bit lower myself....

Many guys lift the trucks and slap big tire/wheel combos on there and don't touch the drive train or brakes and find them selves in a world of trouble on steep grades.

You can flip the axles yourself in an afternoon.  :good

Exactly, the axles need to be flipped on the springs. I personally think it looks funny and as stated it brings the center of gravity much higher. I wouldn't want to tow it in much of any side wind.
That much lift on a truck used 95% for road use is a waste. Might look cool(pimp factor :p ) but it alters several dynamics, stability and most certainly fuel consumption. When I was a bit younger I wanted to lift my truck like that but my brain told me otherwise, I ended up replacing just the front springs in order to make the truck ride level.
I pull a 40' 5'er.

Is there any insurance issues with raising the trailer? Higher is less stabile which is more dangerous which equals more liability.

I know a lot of people don't like the look or idea of a lifted truck.  Personally, I like it a lot, but I'm not sold on it entirely.  Does anyone know if there are places that will do this axel flip on a trailer. cost?  I know it was suggested that it could be done in an afternoon, but I don't want hubby doing it- YIKES!  He's a numbers dude, not a mechanical one :laugh

Looks of a lifted truck are cool but the practicality of it is not.
Even just loading a full cooler in the bed is a PITA. Now think about lifting the 5'er hitch back there.  :eek
Most any trailer store/shop will do the work for you, call around.

Anything beyond tolerance(weight rating) and non-original equipment/design will be deemed unsafe for its original intent and use.
There was a thread on HB several years ago that described exactly this scenario, the guy lost everything he owned and then some when his Insurance refused to cover a non-compliant rig.
I'm not saying that flipping the axles in non-compliant but I'd not want to run that risk.

We almost lost it all a few years back. wife almost lost her life. The person that hit her had no insurance. It had expired 6 1/2 hours before accident. I did get a very nice letter from them though.

With a 35' 5'er a longbed is probably a better idea anyhow.

I guess I past the needing to look cool part of life, I'm more function before form now. Limiting liabilities is important to me.

I agree, I like to error on the side of caution.  But it all comes down to how much you actually tow.  If you go to Glamis twice a year, get the lifted truck w/short bed, looks cooler.  But if you're towing that 5'er every weekend, a stock hight long bed will make life alot easier.

I guess I past the needing to look cool part of life, I'm more function before form now. Limiting liabilities is important to me.

the sliders work fine. You probably saw guys too cheap to but it though.
With a 35' 5'er a longbed is probably a better idea anyhow.

I haven't given up, it just isn't all that important to me anymore, I guess. It costs alot to impress other people :laugh
