All of a sudden this morning I can't keep connection to my wireless router.  Everycouple minutes it drops out, but when I go to the avialable networks screen it's there... along with half a dozen other encrypted networks, save for an MSHOME network that appears to be open...

It's happened twice while I composed this post.  

Arghh... is there anyway I can configure the wireless card to only look for my router??

Every so often my wireless connection drops out too and only shows "local access".  Usually rebooting both the computer and the router fixes the problem for me, but one time it was out for several hours.  I have no idea why it does that, but I have had friends tell me that routers don't seem to last too long.  Figures. :rolleyes

Is your router set to be your default network?

Also try this.Shut everything down. Remove power supply from router and modem. Let them chill for abit. Power up the router. Let it sit for abit. Then power up the modem, when it resets turn it on. Then boot up yer puter :eek  :D  Search for network and it should ask you if you want it as your default when you go to use it.  :comp

I had a password when I initially set up the router.  Got a message one day saying the password had been changed and I needed to verify the change by inputting my original password.  Won't take that password, so i can't change it to set up a new one. :rolleyes  My desktop is having issues connecting to the internet, I think it needs a new modem.  Guess it's time to call India and get some tech support. :angry

I have found that our wireless routers only last a year of so before they start acting all funky, dropping in and out of service. Funny part is we hav a trend net from Comp USA that cost $5.99 after rebate....It's been the most reliable one we have had!   Who knew???

What router do you have?? I have worked with Belkins that do what yor talking about. I recently had a freind that had a Belkin  wireless router and had belkin USB antenna on the PC doing just what you are explaining. Replaced it with Linksys on both sides and you talk about major speed and conectivity.

Always Always encrypt your wireless network. Use and ecryption key or a password, leaving it open is asking for trouble. An open network used by other(s) will hog your bandwidth and result in the symptoms described. Your network provider could also be having issues resulting in losing your IP address.

How old is your wireless router? If more than say 3-4 years, replace it with a NetGear or Belkin, Apple also has some great set ups.

Lastly when your configure your network, have it always default to your network, that way you wont "'jump on" to another which could also result in those symptoms.

Why Belkin or Netgear? I haven't played with Netgear but this is the seconed time I have dealt with Belkin that has severly played a roll in connection speed and intermitant lose of. Both times the users had Linksys to change to and massively gainng connection speed when changed to Linksys.

Also, if you have enough ports, when you go get that new router, get a USB wireless device rather than the PCMCIA card...faster (I think)  :good

I do not buy any computer related gear without going to cnet.com first and have a looksee at their reviews. Best to always leave it to the experts before plunking down your hard earned coin.

Lincsys router... and it's encrypted...

Did a little trouble shooting, powered everything down and back up... been fine since then.  Must have been sunspots or something... :D

Routers and modems have a memory, and if a signal is changed you have to clear the memory, Cox told me that when I had problems, after that no more problems!.. :good
