Satine our black lab needs to see an Ortho Vet due to poss. dysplasia Dx about 3 weeks ago. She is currently on pain meds. But today has taken a turn for the worse.

First, I need some referrals.

Second, I need some ideas on raising the funds.

So, come all you HD peeps jump on with some ideas?

We love her so much! I am not putting her down!

Wow Silver, sorry to hear that. I've just gone through something similar with our guy. He blew out his ACL and requires a fairly complex surgery.

I've had to take a quick course on the whole process and we met yesterday morning with the doctor who will perform the surgery. The first referral was to a high falutin' animal hospital in West L.A. and they wanted $4300.00 to do the work! :eek

Way out of our price range - like you, putting the dog down was not even a consideration, so off to Doctor shopping I went!

Waterdog - Ken may know of some contacts down your way. We ended up at a great place called All Pets Veterinary Hospital in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Nicer than some Human Hospitals I've been to! The Vet - Dr. Caylor spent over an hour and a half with us going over every possible question and concern and then some.

As for funding this, timing is everything. We had been planning on buying a new refrigerator....well, we'll get by with the one we have for a while. :peace

If your Satine is in a lot of pain, she's had this problem for years. Dysplasia is degenerative you know by know. Did your vet give you an idea of costs. Best Doc in your area is Dr. Zerrelli. If he's not in your book I can get the number, if you need it.

Thanks Glassman, I hope your guy has a successful surgery please keep me posted on his progress.

I will look into my leads. My biggest question is that since I haven't had timing on my side, funds are not there. But payments are so doable. Do theses Vets understand that not everyone can afford it all up front?

She's only 9 months old! And she ROCKS!

First right off the bat. If the pup is only 9 months old it wouldn't be Dysplastic. That would by a birth defect. It happens. Zerrelli is a specailist that works by referral only. That's not a problem. Most vets do want dollars at time of service. Some will finance. Make share your both clear on payment conditions up front. Most if not all are gonna want a few thousand up front too. Did you happen to buy the pup from a breeder.

Got her from my man's sporting wood from here and hot boat. She bread about 3 liters. A lot of us boaters got pups from her.

A down and payments are doable for me. It'a all up front that I can not do.

It may very well be something else. Let's hope!

Now you have two good reason's that the pup probably isn't dysplastic. Angie would know especailly if all 3 litters were same mom and dad. Did vet #1 take x-rays. I'll send you some names and numbers in the mid-morning.

Silver, I'm sure you, like me have been reading all you can get your hands on about your dog's condition......I just did a quick Google and found an informative article you may not have seen yet:

Hopefully your pup hasn't developed arthritis so bad that it will hinder recovery. Maybe even a non-invasive approach might work. I've started my dog on all the usual stuff...glucosamine, MSM, anti-inflammatory. The Doc says it can't hurt, but does take a while before any appreciable results are seen.
