My trailer is a Competitive, dual axle, white.  It was owned as was the boat by a guy from South Dakota for two years before he traded it in on an Ultra, where I picked it up last year.

I guess from the roads in South Dakota it has a buttload of chips in the paint.  Some small areas of rust, but not bad.  It is only 3 years old.

I am thinking I should repaint it. But probably a different color.  The boat is mostly white and dark blue, with some red-orange details.

Should I do the trailer in a matching blue to help hide chips or white because it will be easier??

If it has rust regardless of how much, sandblast it and paint it the color of your choice!. A patch job will bite you in the ass later, it's not worth it been there done that!. :angry

I agree with Gofast it is best if you strip it down before you repaint. However it may be better to only clean the rusted areas if they are just in a few areas. On some trailers they use a lot of body filler to fill imperfections in the metal (Welds, Pitting, Seams) when you sandblast you will have to redo all of this. So if the rust is only in a small area you can save yourself a lot of work by treating spots.

I would also recommend a self etching primer. Here is a link to the post regarding repainting my trailer. I am not a paint expert so take my stuff with a grain of salt. I am happy with the way my trailer came out and it didn’t cost much as a matter of fact it was the cheapest improvement I made.

Oh my trailer was white and I painted it yellow to match my boat. I think that it looks much better yellow. It makes the boat look sleeker and lower to the ground when on the trailer. Just my 2 cents.

I will try to post some pics of it.  The rust is only on the chipped areas..at least thats what it looks like.  I'm thinking a dark blue will hide any future chips.

Any idea what a sandblasting would run?

I dont know what it will cost to sandblast your trailer. But the paint you need to use is a polyurathane. It wont chip very easy and is very tough.

I don’t know what it would cost to have it sandblasted. I have a sandblaster so I have never paid anyone to do it. But if you do go the sandblasting route; remember that no matter how hard you try the sand will get everywhere. So I would pull the wheels and bearings. You could try to mask it to keep the sand out but it has an uncanny knack of getting in anyway.  Just my 2 cents.

It sounds like your trailer is in the same shape mine was before I started. I decided not to sandblast and just spot treat the bad areas. But the best way is to sandblast it completely and start from bare metal (Just a little more time consuming).  :good

Check all the welds for rust!, if that trailer was anywhere near salt water or salt air, that's where it will break, learned that the hard way, a crossmember broke at the welds going down the road from rust!. Just my experience!.. :eek
