There is a bad virus about to hit.  It is already sitting on thousands of servers around the World waiting for instructions from the Virus writer.  It is scheduled to launch April 1st.  Here is a copy of the email I sent out to my customers;

There is a new version of the April Fools Day virus going around, called "Conficker C" that can completely take over your computer(s) this April 1st.  This new worm virus has the potential to be the most damaging virus in a few years.   What's known so far is that on April 1, all infected computers will come under the control of a master machine located somewhere across the web, at which point anything's possible. Will the zombie machines become denial of service attack pawns, steal personal information, wipe hard drives, or simply manifest more traditional malware pop-ups and extortion-like come-ons designed to sell you phony security software? No one knows.
I highly recommend to everyone that you run this free scanner from Microsoft located here http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm  to make sure that you don't have it on your Computer(s).  It might be sitting on your Hard Drive dormant and if it is, it will launch this Wednesday.  And as always, please keep all Anti Virus Programs up to date.

This virus has keyloggers built into it and the hackers will be able to record and see EVERYTHING that you do on your screen, including bank account info, credit cards, etc.
It will spread quite a bit through the social sites such as Facebook and Myspace.

Everyone really needs to be vigilant on this one and make SURE that you don't have it laying dormant on your computer now, and make sure you don't get it when it launches on Wednesday.  This one has the potential to be the worst virus in History.  Don't be part of it.....

Okay Jim, bear with me here, please.  Will my Norton find this virus?  Did it come from an email, pop up, anything like that?  

I clicked on your link...then the link to the beta version for Vista.  There's a ginormous service contract that I am supposed to agree to, that mentions payments and getting my info...what happened to the FREE part?  Do I have to give microsoft all my info to get the free scan?  Any more info you can give me?

I heard about this one on the news, looks like a bad one!. That's ok bring it on I'm ready, be interesting to play with!.. :D

Norton May or May NOT catch it, same with every other AV Program.  Problem is, this virus is just sitting dormant on thousands of servers all over the World, waiting on a set of instructions from the Hackers.  If a Virus sits on your PC and doesn't act like a virus, the Anti-Virus Programs don't identify and catch it.  That is why Microsoft offered $3 million to whomever identifies the writer of this particular virus....It's like no other and has the Potential to do lots of damage, or get account info, or can even shut down the Internet completely.  Nobody knows.  It will all depend on the instructions it receives on April 1st.

I have to agree :good   I have seen a server that was completely wiped out by a virus and it was running Norton AV with current updated Virus Definitions.  I ended up spending 6 days, 12 hours per day, getting rid of the virus and recovering their data.  I have seen MANY viruses sneak through both Mcafee and Norton

But I might also want to add here on the Virus topic.  ALL Virus Infections are caused by USER ERROR.  A virus isn't an infection until a user initiated command is ran.  Such as clicking on a link that infects, or launching an infected file, etc etc.  It all boils down to common sense.

DO NOT open anything in an email if you're not expecting it, do NOT go to websites that run malware programs, etc etc.

This Conficker Virus WILL BE ATTACKING Facebook, Myspace, and other social networks and sending out messages via the messaging portals in the websites, that will make it look like your "friend" is emailing/messaging you.  Click on the link and BAM...You're infected.
It will also be attacking the regular methods such as email, websites, etc etc.

Just be extra Vigilant until this all calms down.  As of right now there is no Sure Fix for it since there is no specific instructions for it.

Yep...Many times.

I usually don't use the web based ones because they take too much time.  I have many tools on thumb drives that I carry around my neck on work days....Mush quicker and more effective.

I just recommended a web based version to everyone because naturally, there's no way of me knowing who has what AV Program, if is up to date, and if it's working properly.

Easiest way to circumvent that is a web based scanner.  Lotsa good ones out there.

It was kinda Ironic....About an hour after I sent my warning out to my customers, this Virus was the top story on 60 Minutes.  They said at the end of the story that they (CBS) even got infected with it and after spending 24/7 for 10 days getting rid of it, they still are not sure they got it all.  

Truth is, nobody will know what's really going on Until April 1st.  Nobody will know how many are infected, or how many it will infect, or what it will do.

Of course, the Best Outcome would be if these hackers are stuck in s filthy restroom in a 3rd World Country and can't get to a computer to send the set of instructions to it.  THese infected servers around the World are just waiting for the next set of instructions that they are scheduled to receive on April 1st.  Hopefully they don't receive anything...Then everything should be good for a little while again and give the experts more time to neutralize this thing.

Yes, it can come from an email, popup, website, link on Facebook, etc etc.  Like I said, be vigilant and don't open or click on anything that is suspicious.  At Trend Micro's Website they have a free link checker if you want to install that.  It checks websites before you go to them.  Much like the latest AVG AV does already.  Go to Trendmicro.com and click on Tools.... You'll see it there

You wouldn't believe how many people have told me the computer just "did it" all by itself.  :rotflmao  :rotflmao  :rotflmao   I have an error code I use regularly for that.
 I call it the "ID (Number ten) T" error.  Then I have the customer spell it out on a piece of paper :D  :rotflmao  :rotflmao

So what you're saying is Norton's may or may not get it, same as with any other AV program, web based or installed on my computer.  It's a crapshoot no matter what.  Great.

That first link may indeed have been free...but there was a whole lot of mumbo jumbo, and that bugged me.  Maybe the non vista link is different.  I'll check out the other one.

I hate all those freakin hackers, virus makers, worm creaters, whateverthehelltheyare.  I think they should all have their pubic hairs ripped out by an epilady. :good

I agree 100%.  Although I make $$ fixing infected computers, I would much rather not go out on Virus calls.  They get VERY frustrating and stressful at times and I don't have anybody I can call if I get stumped...Just gotta work through it and put on a cheerful face for the customer :D  :D  :D  :D

I'd much rather do Networking, Server Administration, Computer Repairs, Printer Repairs, etc....ANYTHING other than Virus removal.  That is why I warn my customers in advance.  Hopefully I don't get any calls on this one, but I know that I will :banghead  :banghead   And since the Security Experts have been working on trying to analyze this virus for a year now and they still haven't figured it out, I would venture to guess that it will probably give me some troubles too :banghead  :banghead

:rotflmao Had a neighbor like that always blamed the computer said it was a POS, I looked at it once for him and it was FULL of Trojans, told him to stay away from the cheasy porn sites!..  :rolleyes  :rotflmao

My customers have been nailing me with phone calls this morning.  Seems like this thing is all over the news now and folks are worrying.

So we can't come back to HDF either?  Seems to me this forum as well as any others are just as vulnerable (especially with all that cheesy porn in the too hot for hotboat forum  :D  :laugh  ).  :p

I know places like myspace and FB are more vulnerable simply due to the volume of traffic vs a place like HDF.  But I've seen forums taken down by hackers simply because they could. :angry  Gun boards seem to be a favorite target, but I've also seen innocuous boards like HDF hit as well.  Some rose again, some didn't.  It really pisses me off. :pissed

Viruses have ALWAYS been able to hit forums.  It is nothing new.  Doug keeps this place pretty tidy though :good  :good

As an example of what can happen on forums;
Last week while going through the "Boat Spam" section on the PB Forums, I noticed an ad that looked odd and had some funky characters on it.  I was suspicious so I made sure all of my AV/AS/AM protections were ready to go then I clicked on it.
As soon as I clicked on it, the link to the topic tried to redirect my PC automatically to a website that was infected BIG TIME.  My server sounded all sorts of bells and whistles and I promptly got out and then I warned one of the moderators there about it and it was deleted.  However, 14 people did view the topic at that point.  Not sure how many got infected, but I would imagine some did.

That is just 1 example of how things can go bad really fast for ya when on the internet.  It doesn't matter really where you go or what you do if you don't pay attention to everything.  Look at it this way, the Pentagon gets hacked frequently.  If these hackers can hack the Pentagon, they sure as hell won't have a hard time hacking a Boating Forum if they choose to.

Just be vigilant and pay attention to your "Virtual" surroundings and you should be ok.

HDF will probably be the safest place to be on Wednesday :good   In fact, I think ya need to just stay here all day on Wednesday and catch these PW's CE and GFR :D  :D

Seriously though, this site will be fine.  I wouldn't hesitate one bit going to HD Forums ANYTIME (Unless my ex-wife found me here :laugh  :laugh  )

And the "Too Hot For Hotboat" section....A necessary evil.  Us old fat guys need SOMETHING to lift our spirits and remind us of something that once was :D  :D  :D
