Colorado River boaters (who drink) beware Operation Dry Water

Summer is at hand and the Colorado River, long a favored party spot for boaters, is becoming increasingly crowded.

But the era in which boaters could freely drink and operate their vessels without worrying about police has vanished. Law enforcement now treats operating under the influence on the water as seriously as it treats driving under the influence on land.

Why? Because most deadly boating accidents involve consumption of alcohol.

And if there's one weekend that a  crackdown will be evident,  it's June 26-28, when Operation Dry Water will launch nationwide and will include a tri-state campaign on the most popular boating party spot west of the Mississippi.

That's the Colorado River, whose shores are in California, Arizona and Nevada. Though the campaign is designed to promote awareness and responsibility, boaters along the 233-mile system can expect to encounter checkpoints and will land in deep trouble if they've had too much to drink.

Said Raynor Tsuneyoshi, California's boating law administrator: "The reality is, for their safety and the safety of others, if you choose to drink and then operate a boat at or above the legal .08 limit, you will go to jail."

Consider yourselves warned.

They also should have common sense checkpoints. :confused  I was out at havi last weekend and could not believe the idiots pulling kids on tubes not paying attention. It looked like the I-10 freeway 3 and 4 wide going in all directions. :banghead  It was truly scary.  :cry There must have been a fire in the hills because all the squirrels were on the water. :jawdrop

I still say that we need mandatory education class attendance PRIOR to registration...LOTS of states have...Cali and AZ don't... :beat

That is a good idea, but then turn them loose and a few :drink and all that edumacation and common sense goes down the crapper!.. :beat

I don't think all the people were drinking, :drink  but most of them do need training of some type. :beat   The enforcement officers did not have a chance with that many idiots out at one time.  I came from the old school where your father taught you your boating skills when you were growing up, but somewhere we must have skipped a few boaters. The boat cops earned their money last weekend. (Not that they don’t every day)

I read it. Should be starting tomorrow. Lets watch for the reports flooding in. Don't know about the whole 233 miles but from Needles to the Parker Dam is on mimimal staffing getting ready for the 4th.

You can always come over here to Lake Erie and go boating, Lots of room nobodys out there anymore and we sure as hell don't have any cops in the city let alone out on the water, they got rid of the foot and horse patrols. Heck they were just joking on the radio how we don't even have a rush hour here anymore, well unless someone has a fender bender then you may have a bit of a wait, Hell I went though downtown 3 times this week a 6pm and rolled right though at 65mph.

Oh P.S.   If you do come here to boat just bring a nose clamp to wear, you no to put on your nose so you don't smell the sewage plant there by east 55st.

Thats pretty much where I came from. We spent a lot of time on the parker strip during the summers. I'm all for someone buying a boat to be required to take a boating coarse before they can get the boats registration. It is to easy to buy a watercraft with not knowing the way of the water ways.

Authorities to crackdown on drunken boat operators


STAFF REPORTS
Thursday, June 25, 2009 10:37 PM MST


Mohave County Sheriff’s Office will be out in force again this weekend to participate in a boating under the influence crackdown.

The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators is partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard in a nationwide effort called Operation Dry Water this weekend to stop individuals who choose to operate a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol.

Arizona Game and Fish Department will be conducting a checkpoint at an undisclosed location on the Colorado River June 26-28, according to AZGFD officials.

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department will also be participating with saturation patrols on the river, officials said.

Marine law enforcement officers from 43 states and territories will participate in Operation Dry Water over the weekend.
