So usually when little things start happening you know the big ones coming :break

Our desktop is flat lining. Something focked over the hard drive or the thing just took a chit. Can't get to any programs like restore and won't load any cd-roms to boot-up. The external hard drive won't boot up. :stupid

I can access C prompt and found a command to run restore thru there but it won't accept it. :banghead

Of course last back up was a couple weeks ago, but I still want to recover this thing for the last 2 weeks data. Gota learn to back up everyday dammit and I would throw this thing in the garbage :guns

If you can get to the "C:\" prompt, you might be able to copy the data to a USB device. Another idea would be to pull the drive and plug it into another tower as a slave...

SyncToy from Microsoft is FREE and you scan set it to run daily, backing up to an external USB drive... :good

The external HD has an automatic back up :comp

I just allways seem to be around when that kinda stuff is going on. Lot a help that was :banghead

Got the biatch started up in Safe Mode finally :drama

But in the Safe Mode Only no extras. Tried with networking and it started wiggin out again. System restore is still not accessable but it looks like I should be able to transfer the important files to an external. which I thought I had all ready done but when I checked there was nada :eek

Not to mention all the havac its causing on my home network since its computer #1 :pissed

Not sure going to run what stuff I got, but it but its been acting crappy for awhile its about 3 years old so it may just be on its way out. :guns

It's a virus. Rootkit. GUARANTEE you that's what it is going by all of the symptoms you mentioned.
There are a few going around that are disabling the Network Cards and The System Restore and making drives do goofy things.

If you can get it into safe mode, and can read a drive (CD ROM or Thumb Drive etc) then go to a different computer, download AVAST! Home Edition (It's free at Download.com) install it, and it will ask you if you want to run a boot up scan after it restarts....Click on YES!

When the AVAST finds the rootkits, make sure you delete them all

The cooling fan won't affect the software. Only the Hardware and I/O.
The fact that he can get it to boot into safe mode but system restore doesn't work and networking doesn't work leads me to believe there is a virus.

If it doesn't work out, send me the hard drive and I'll recover the data for you. I can usually recover the data pretty reliably even if the HDD has been formatted.

Gotta agree it does sound like a virus, but I've had similar symptoms that wasn't caused by a virus, just a bad glitch in the software and was able to fix it through the Recovery Console!.... This is a pretty good program to pull files from a dead drive, used it a few times!.. :good

Doh....I all ready have Avast! on the dorked out computer. Funny how the free trial is about to end and its the fix for the problem :say?

Running Avast! in safe mode is being difficult if you run the boot scan it wants to boot back up in normal mode and if you let it its doa. :banghead

I had a book that a cpu fan was not working and was having issues processing the data due to heat. It was just a thought. It does sound now that he possibly has picked a bug or two. Been there done that.
