I don't think I've posted anything about my latest money pit, and since I'm thought to be a brick shy of a full load, I'll prove it.
Earlier this year I decided I needed another project, and since the garage is full of cars, the only place to go was in the driveway. The wife thought I was going to sell one of the cars to make room, but I showed her... I brought THIS home!

1969 Stevens 18' flatbottom jet 390 Ford FE motor, Berk JA pump, and the reverse lever ON THE DASH! When I first saw the boat, I began picking at the chips in the "paint", and saw BIG gold metalflake underneath. Kinda intrigued me, so I bought it. Here's a glimpse of what I started uncovering.

I'll flash forward here and just explain that after trying to start the engine (10 qts of water in a 5 quart oil pan), I eventually wound up having to sleeve 2 cylinders, bore it, OK, TOTALLY rebuild it. The hardware is all original Edelbrock v-drive that was adapted for those new fangled jetboats they were building '69.
Rebuilt the pump, and restored the original nozzle.


Flashing forward a bit more, I broke in the new engine last weekend, and now I just have to check the tanks for leaks and it's off to the upholsterer for a new interior.

It won't be fast, and I've got carried away with polishing, but it keeps me off the streets.

No, but they are identical to the Halibrands I have on the T. I've always loved those wheels and thought they'd look cool on an old period boat trailer. A couple other things I'm doing on the trailer. It came originally with teakwood side steps... the new teak should be in in a couple weeks. The lights are turning into a problem, though. The honky looking rear extension somebody welded on will be going, so the lights must be replaced. I don't know HOW they launched with it that way, since there's a pretty good size turning fin underneath. :banghead The trailer originally had reflectors instead of sidemarkers, and had a removable rear light bar for the taillights. That won't fly nowadays, so I'm trying to find something that looks kind of period correct, but modern.

Thanks, I'm not done stripping yet. The gray you see toward the front is primer. I need to wash it down with acetone, and when I get the trailer on level ground, climb under and strip the paint on the bottom. Then new bunks, new fenders, blah, blah, blah. Does it ever end? :fouet

I thought it was "interesting" too... that's why I bought it. Everone talks about a flatbottom jet (or have heard of them), but how many have actually SEEN one? It's my "Tuesday thru Thursday, gonna need a kidney belt" boat.
When the interior is done, I'll be colorsanding and buffing it to see how good the gel will come back. That'll be it for this year, but if I keep it long enough, I'll redo the gel as it was originally.
I'm having a hard time with a name for this one. For some reason "Goldfinger" keeps coming to mind.....

Part of restoring this boat is trying to reproduce things that aren't available. Hell, I don't know if they ever WERE, but why stop there. I'm using the original nozzle, so after painting it, it looked like it needed an old Berkeley decal on it. I don't know WHERE to get one, so I made it. It is kind of the finishing touch.....

More work this weekend. Checked out the fuel tanks for leaks, pickups in place, etc, and all is good. It's off to the upholsterer next weekend for new vinyl. When I had the seats out yesterday, I found a piece of the original vinyl... just happens to be the same color as what I've picked for the new seats.  :jumpie


Here's a shot of a few of the high tech features I've kept.
Lower left- stainless eyebolt screwed into the top of the stringer for the harness to go thru. Crude but effective.
Center- Nope, no seal like the "new" pumps, and it's gonna sling grease. This is the main reason I'm putting a pump cover back on it.
Right- since the bowl is inside under the deck, there's no way to get to the plugs to fill the bowl with gear oil. Ingenious remote filler arrangement.

Yes, that's the fitting for the garden hose to run it out of water. If I DID open it in the water, it'd spray the alternator. I'll just try REAL hard to remember to keep it closed.

Nothing stupid about the question. Most people have never seen this type of reverse lever.... it's an old school thing. The odd thing about it is, in a car, reverse is up and drive (forward) is down. On the boat, forward is up, and reverse is down. That's going to take some getting used to.... :stupid

Took the Stevens in to the upholsterer this morning, so no updates for a while. Finishing up getting the Circus Boat done so we can head back out to the river and get the last run of the year in.  :jumpie With surgery slated for 12/14, my activities will be very limited for the next few months, so I better get my fun in now. Dragging the bikes out too, so I can teach the youngest how to ride the 100, and the oldest how to ride MY bike  :banghead

The oldest rode my bike once before, and stalled it a couple times and flooded it, so he's a little apprehensive about climbing back on. It's a bit bigger than his old bike (he outgrew it), so he needs to get the feel of it. I worked on it over the weekend, and it's quite a bit pipier than before.... hope he doesn't loop it.  :eek
The youngest says he doesn't want to learn to ride a bike, he wants a quad. Told him there's no quad in his future unless he learns to ride a bike. The standoff continues.....

Thanks. I went by the upholsterer this afternoon and picked the colors and materials. Went over the details since I can't seem to do anything the "normal" way. You know how carpet sections come together (like the floor and the stringer), and it looks ok, but you can tell they butt together? Well, not on this. all the edges are going to be bound (vinyl sewn on the edges) so all the seams have a finished look. The blue panels will be a medium ("coco") brown, with the inserts in an ivory tuck-and-roll. The seat backs will now be one piece so when you look at the top of the backs, they'll be smooth with no seam between the front and back.... just the welting. carpet is a slightly darker brown to hide what river debris winds up inside.
More later, but Earthlink has jacked up my DSL and I'm on dialup and getting frustrated.  :banghead
