Hello everyone :-) My names Andy. Im new to this forum. Back in November, I bought a 1978 18 foot bahner jetboat with a 454. Up until I got the boat, all I did was fix up cars and trucks. I plan a full restoration for it. I went to the river for the first time last summer and I got hooked. Few months later I got the boat, hehe. Anyway, shes ugly now, but itll be a great project getting it back in shape. I plan to paint the boat bright red, and do the interior white with red trim, and Im going to pretty much do a complete engine and jet pump rebuild but with aftermarket parts in place of stock. Last weekend I pulled the engine and started to clean the engine area. Ã‚Â Any questions or comments are welcome :-)

Thanks bro, its always nice to feel welcome. I havent ever owned something like a boat or a dirtbike, and I was going to buy a quad, but like for me I always like to take buddies with me cuz its more fun, and a quad doesnt seat 4 lol. I think its funny that theres other members in alta loma, if any of you are reading this, whats upppp. lol. I seriously look foreward to getting this boat ready for the summer.

Yeah The fire only got about 3/4 mile from as a crow flies. We all were pretty lucky that it didn't come any farther east. I am ready to move back down the hill and get out of snow and stop wondering where the next fire is going to be.

true true. I think thats cool btw that you have a 460 ford. I have always been a ford person, as I used to work for them, and pretty much most of the engine experience I have had has been witht eh ford modular engines and smaller, but Now that I have the big block its on lol.

Thank you :-) Im starting to buy all the engine parts so I can just throw it together one weekend, Im kinda stuck ont he cooling system tho. I was thinking of the closed loop system that CP sells, but I dont know I havent used either kind of setup on a boat so I dont know, but I do know that I want my engine temps at a reasonable level, not ice cold lol.

I rebuilt my '78 460 immediately after I bought my boat in 1990 and haven't touched the bottom end since then. :eek

I was concerned about water temps, too, but was surprised to find no one ran closed looped systems for their fresh water jet boats. Ã‚Â The amount of hours you put on a boat motor will never come even close to those put on a car motor. Ã‚Â Therefore, you might not even notice the increased wear from the colder water temps. Ã‚Â There are a few guys on this board that know more about this topic than I do though.

In my case, I went with a remote water jacketed oil cooler. Ã‚Â Basically with it, you're killing two birds with one stone. Ã‚Â You're preheating the water before it enters the block while cooling your oil at the same time. :good

Ã‚Â The place I got mine is no longer around, but I know you can get them at Rex Marine in San Dimas. Ã‚Â They are not far from you and they are friends of HDF. :good

Ã‚Â At the time of this post, you can get one for $128.24.

BTW, they is an HDF'er who works at Eliminator and lives right off the 210 in Alta Loma.

Looks like a cool project you got there, the Bahner was very popular back in the day in circle racing!.. :good

A note about cooling, oil temp is the critical factor not water, you need the oil at 180-210 for it to do it's job, water temp can be whatever it's going to be, the worst thing you can do is pour cold lake water into a hot engine, and besides a cool engine serves as an oil cooler. Unless you're going to run hard for long distances odds are you won't need an oil cooler, an oil temp guage is your best friend!.. Also you need to add extra clearance in the cylinder walls for expantion in a boat motor!.. :good

You can restrict the water flow into it with a gate valve so that even though it goes in cold, it can warm up a bit.

Sometimes with old jet boats, sand has built up in the block if it has been run in shallow water. In that case, heat may not transfer to the water properly and you may end up with higher oil temps. Jet boat engines usually run at higher rpms than car motors as well, which can generate more heat. Jet boats engines run at higher rpms than any other drive at slow speeds too.

hehe tell me bout it. When I was removing the engine I took the head plug out to drain the water and nothing came out even though that water was up to the t-stat housing so i stuck a screw driver in the plug hole and wiggled it and sandy ass water came out like I got 3 good soda cans of sand out because I kept dumping water into the top of the engine. Whats the best way to get all the sand out? I was thinking of replacing the freeze plugs and running water thru the engine while the freeze plugs are out.

Freeze plugs are cheap. Sand can be very expensive. Flush it once, Flush it twice, then Flush it again. If in doubt repeat. When you think all the sands out, Flush it again.

In my case, I was doing a total rebuild anyway so I stripped it down to the bare block. I blew water and air through every water passage and used a long thin screwdriver to break up the sand in the water jacket. I, then, had it hot tanked.

I got a housing for my hour meter and mounted it on the inside of the transom under the deck. It's not like I have to see it while I'm driving.
