So I got bored yesterday and started to put together a 454 short block I had pieces sitting around for. When I started stabbin the pistons, I got 2 in and my ring compressor broke   :angry So I went and picked up one of the metal ratchet/band style, The focking thing was fighting me big time. Pissed around and found that if I didn't tighten it so tight things went together alot smoother. I'll bet I was over tightening the one I broke. It was kind of a squeeze wrench dealio.

7 months and counting, I want to take a boat to OP6C in June. Guess I better find a job or start making some $$$. Think Jeg's takes food stamps  :rotflmao

I am no expert by any means. But when I did mine I used one of those tapered aluminum ring type of compressors. It worked really well and was really smooth and easy on the rings. I would recommend that type. I borrowed mine from my machinist he had one for almost every piston size that he lent out to his customers.  :good

Yeah, those tapered compressors are the shit, they also get $36 a piece for them, but you get what you pay for!. :laugh I use a SnapOn ratchet type that works great!. :good Now if I was building engines for a living and time is a factor, I definitly would invest in the tapered ones!.. :good  :D

Tapered ring compressors are the way to go!

You could have bought a whole set for what ya paid for that Snap-on dealio I'll bet. Good tools but a little spendy. I will agree that tapered is the way to go.
