Art,I wanted your opinion I'm thinking about changing my Head's to a set of Aluminum Head's OR should I just go with a set of 990's,but not sure what type with out spending ton's of money right now. Here is a quick run down on what I have right now......I have a set of basicly stock Oval Port Open Chambered Head with a Rectangular Tunnel Ram on it with 660's center squirter's on it.
Schneider cam ............Valve Lift...................Duration
       Intake                  .590                          .304
     Exhaust                  .622                          .320
    Lobe Separation 108
Motor is a 468 With 10.50 Compression
Now would I want to jump up to a set of Rectangular Port or go with a Good set of Oval Port-Open Chamber
Also I do plan on Freshing up the Bottom end but if it won't clean up I might open it up alittle more and that would mean putting alittle more Compression to it not really sure at this time how that will play out tho. :D I hope I gave you enough Information to go on,Now everybody will see why I'm so slow  :rolleyes  :rolleyes

Steve, if you're looking for top end power the square ports are the way to go, especially since you have the intake setup already. Aluminum or iron?, that depends on a few things, if you want to save weight, aluminums are half the weight as irons, aluminums don't retain heat like the irons do though, and the aluminums are a lot more expensive. With what you have, a set of 990's with 2.25IN and 1.88EX, clean up all the sharp edges, gasket match the ports and you could have 600HP easy. That cam is a little small though and with a 108 centers, you are losing compression from the overlap. If you plan on staying with low compression, I would use a cam with 112 centers but I would recommend stepping up the compression a bit regardless....Hope this helps.... :good

Art,Thank's for such a quick reply...........OK then if I step up to 112 center's on the Cam what kinda of Lift will this be also not to go over board what kind of Compression would you recommend with out getting to crazy with Gas 11-1.
My TRW Piston's I have  now started off at 11-1 till the pocket's were cut for the Valve's Clearence then I ended up somewhere in the range of 10.50-10.75.
Art so when can I drop my Motor off and how long do you think it will take you? :jumpie  :jumpie  :rotflmao

Ok let's start from square one here. What heads do you have?, are they 049's??. You say you had to have the pistons cut for clearance for 622 lift??, then you don't have open chambered heads?, what CC's are your chambers??. With 12.5 to 1 open chamber TRW pistons you can run up to 700 lift without fly cutting the pistons. 990 heads are 119 cc's, my cam has 669 lift and I have tons or room. If you plan on 990 heads, I think you will have to change pistons also if I got the picture right??..  :stupid

BTW, you can bring it over anytime, MONEY determines how long it will take!... :laugh  :laugh

Art,I honestly don't know which head's I have But i do know they are Oval Port - Open Chambered this was a stock motor 8-1 compression out of my Jet(Sorry)Boat that I bought new back in 1976.In 1983 when I got SMART I bought the Flattie and put this Motor into it :jumpie and just freshen up the Motor.I had a friend of Mine Build the Motor the way it is now back in 1993  but I do know they had to cut for the clearence for the Piston's, Sorry I don't remember what they cc'd out at :( thanks for all the information your giving me Art :good

BTW,Does this mean the Less Money I give you the more of a Hurry you'll be to get it Finished? :rotflmao

Actually they are semi-open chamber heads. The early ones had a chamber similar to the closed chamber exept they were opened up a bit, the later ones were an imissions head that had most of the quench area removed and both were around 113CC's if I remember right and required a flat type dome piston. The full open chambered head like the 990's are 122CC's and take a large dome piston. These pistons will not fit with the 113CC heads. If you use the 990 head with the shallow dome piston you won't have much compression at all. GM now offers an aluminum open chambered oval port head and I do believe the chambers are 119CC's!... :D

Does this mean the Less Money I give you the more of a Hurry you'll be to get it Finished?.....That's funny!.. :p  :rotflmao  :rotflmao

If you're looking to run hard, I would go with the 990's(unless you want to spend the $$$$;). My previous motor was a 440, 990's, 12.5 to 1, solid flat tappet cam with 108 centers, this tunnelram with 660's. I mixed 50/50 Avgas and 92 octane, 36 lead. With 18 gears, an 11 1/2x14 prop, I ran 9.99 at 106 at 7500rpm's in a quarter. With a 468 you should do better!.... :good  :D

Heat in the chambers make power and the aluminums don't retain it like the irons do, and the fact that it's harder to get heat in the motor to begin with don't help. On the other hand you're taking 75lbs off the motor with the aluminums!. So, a little more power or weight savings????, oh and more money!..Decisions, decisions!!!.. :jumpie  :laugh

Art,Thanks for letting me Pick your Brain I'm going to pull the Motor out during Christmas break I think.Here's what my Plans are.
See if the things will clean up otherwise Bore it out somemore
New piston's maybe in the 11.5 -1 range.
Cam change
Look for a set of 990 heads
Along with all the Regular stuff(Timing chain,Oil Pump, etc)
I'll be in touch Art :D  :D
OH by the way I'm running a 11.5 X 15 Prop along with a Set of 15 Gear's

No, I'm looking for an open chamber head for my truck motor.  I've got the old closed chamber rectangle port now, and I really need to drop the compression with the new motor.

Wow square port heads on a tow vehicle, that has to be a dud on the bottom end!. :eek Are you plagued with the smog gods where you're at?? :angry if you are I have a cherry set of later ovals(not the peanut head) that are the imissions type!. If you're nice maybe Steve would pop a valve cover and look at the numbers on his and see what he has!. :D If smog ain't a concern then the best ones would be the 049's!.. :good

No, no smog gods around here. :jumpie I love living in the country.  I've been looking for some 049's, but the engine shops and junk yards around here horde that stuff, and won't let go of it.    :angry

steve if you plan on keeping the boat for a while and using it for fun i'd stay with cast iron.My reason being is that iron retains heat better,dont have to worry about corrosion,warping,stripping plug threads,etc.
The reason we run alm heads is for racing and weight savings,(and i aint paying for them)If i had to i'd go with equivelent sized irons.And are less expensive to have ported.
Another thing is people think alm makes more power well the main reason being is that most alm heads are ported.But IMO they can both make the same hp if all ports are equal.And you can get away with more comp as compared to iron(but boats run cool anyways)Are you planning on breaking the 40mph mark
