On my last run of the weekend last weekend,engine started cutting out (Fuel pressure gauge reading 0 PSI (1 yr old holley electric pump with regulator);let pump run with engine off for a few minutes,eventually builds pressure back up to around 8.5 psi where it's supposed to be,engine runs till bowls on carb run dry,repeat procedure a few more times to get back (limp) to launch ramp,I'm thinking an obstruction at reg.(pump is pumping (can feel pressure between pump and reg,but doesn't fell like much pressure after reg...
:confused
A)Am I supposed to have a filter before fuel pump?
B)Can regulator be taken apart and cleaned?
HELP...PLEASE

I have a "fuel filter/water separater" before my fuel pump.

If you have one like this you may want to change it, because it may be clogged or your fuel pump may be bad.  :)

Yea,but looks like you have a mechanical fuel pump,filter at back of boat close to pump,my tank and pump under my bow;seems like a filter/seperator would be a good idea...but I don't think I'd have room for a big canister like that under my bow...  :confused

I have a mechanical pump; it's on the block. The water separater/filter is close to the tank, but you can place it anywhere as long as it's before the pump. I'm not sure that helps? Maybe someone else can help?  :)

Napa, sorry it took so long, been busy!. Seems like you have some crud at the regulator, they are very restrivtive to begin with and don't take much to plug them up. Take it apart and look for junk, if your hoses are old you may find a chunk of rubber, if so your hoses may be deteriating. Also if the boat sat over a period of time and gas left in the regulator and dryed up, the diaphram may have deteriated. I always like the filter before the pump to catch anything from the tank, but if a hose starts coming apart after the pump, it still can plug things up. But keep in mind that those pumps are not pullers, they are pushers. The pump should be mounted as close to the tank as possible and use a free flowing screen type filter. If you find that rubber is the culprit, I would suggest replacing all your lines because sooner or later, it will happen again!... Hope this helps!.... :)

I replaced all the lines last year,so I'm pretty sure it's not that.The pump is right at the tank,also.And thanks for type of filter suggestion,I have a paper element type of filter I was gonna try,but screen type seems like it makes more sense.Probably won't get to it till this weekend,but will try to let you know the out-come(he said out-come) :rotflmao

My boat sat for 2 years and I've had fuel filter's get restricted from the gak in the tanks(even after draining and cleaning) I carry 2 spares just in case :good

I checked everything from tank to carb...blew all lines,cleaned all components... nothing out of ordinary...if still not working,has to be pump (seriousally doubt) or (I'm really afraid) pick-up from fuel tank...
Will find out tomorrow...

Try putting a guage just ahead of the pump and see what pressure you have!.. :confused

That's a good idea.Do you know what the unregulated pressure should be?Took it out yesterday,seemed to run fine except for a slight fluctuation of fuel pressure (between 6.5 and 8 PSI).Also,I always thought with elec.fuel pumps the pump was supposed to shut-off after pressure builds up,mine doesn't,runs conatantly.Does that sound right?  :stupid

It depends on what model pump you have, I've seen some Holley's up to 15 lbs before the regulator. I may be wrong on this but, I think those vane pumps run constantly, I think???. I never ran electrics but it seems to me that my friends race car had a pump that ran constantly!..Again, I may be wrong!..  :confused

Thanks :good I kind of think it's supposed to run constantly (can tell a differance when pressure does build up) but just wanted a little confirmation.Also I have old mechanical fuel gauge (should work just replaced it 'cause it looked like hell) will mount between pump and regulator this weekend and see what happens... :D  :jumpie

I have been having the same problem with highspeed lean out, I am putting together a bypass system for my boat, the holley reg has a very small hole for the fuel to pass thru and is restrictive.

The second pic is the bypass system, I tried to use a holley reg to meter the fuel out but no dice, I am going to put a barry grant bypass reg on it and get it dialed in.  

I have a bypass set up on my blown car and it works really well.

Interesting...but for my application (little more than stock 460) I think reg.I have should (seems) sufficiant.Need to make sure I have adequate pressure directly from pump,though first of all...

Motor don't have nothing to do with it, regardless if you have a 1000 hp or a 400 hp motor, if you have a pump that puts out more pressure than needed, a bypass system is the only way to go!, been there done that!.. :)  :good

Took it out this morning,everythimg seems fine (put gauge before regulator,pump putting out 14psi) except for a slight miss around 2000 RPM.Brought it home,checked floats,seemed a bit high,adjusted them,won't be able to take back out 'till this weekend.I was wondering,though,I read somewhere that too much pressure on a Holley (4779) no more than 11 PSI though,could do some damage (seats or seals or something like that)...can someone enlighten some? :stupid

It won't damage the carb, but with that much pressure you overcome the spring at the float and the float won't be able close the needle and seat when the bowls are full resulting in fuel overflow into the motor, that's the reason for a regulator. The most pressure for any carb is 8 to 8 1/2 max, don't need anymore, there's no benefit in it!.. :)
