So I got all crazy and started doing some work on the next victim for the Blue Canoe. Taking the valve train off the 049 heads that had a craving for intake valves and swaping it onto the 781's I picked up.



Not the trickest valve spring compressor but got the job done. Had to clamp the heads to the work table though the Comp Cams springs are pretty strong.

Couple questions :stupid They had these valve spring seat thingys under the exhaust springs their kinda like a thrust bearing cause it spins. I don't remember these being on other heads I've messed with  :rolleyes



Also magnet sticks to the intake valves but not to the exhaust, can I assume the exhaust are stainless and the intakes are not. Any way to "id" valves by looking at them?

Hey I got one them compressors, they get the job done out in the field! :good

Anyhow, those are called rotators they were used mainly on truck engines, it was to keep the valve rotating because of heat. Small blocks use rotating reatainers!...You do not need those, I never use them but you will have to change retainers and use the standard ones!..
You're right, the factory used stainless on the exhaust and regular steel on the intakes, again for the heat!. :D

OK that raises more questions :stupid I bought the cam kit from Comp,.... springs, retainers Yada Yada Yada. The retainers I got from them were all the same part #  :stupid So I assume if I take out the rotaters I should be able to use what I have correct.

Also was I running into coil bind problems using the rotators with the Comp springs. :rolleyes

The factory only uses rotators. The valve seats on the head are all the same depth, they compensated with the retainers to get the right spring height. Intake and exhaust seats are the same on the head, you do NOT use the rotators, that's why you got coil bind. Just use shims to set installed height!. BTW, don't forget to check guide to retainer clearance!.. :good

So the dorks at the machine shop should have removed the rotaters when they put the heads together :angry Ya know I can break sh!t by myself pretty good I don't need their help :beat

When you take out the rotators the spring seat seems to be bigger than the intake spring seat. The spring just rides there with what ever shims I need  :stupid or is there some sort of spring cup dealio?

Whoops, sorry about that I forgot to mention that. Yes the seats are bigger, you will need to get spring cups, they make them for that. Then everything else goes together as normal.

I'm surprised the machine shop didn't ask you if you wanted them or not! :stupid It is normal to not reuse them!.. :rolleyes

So are these what your talking about, their .300 thickness is the about the same as the rotators so why not just use the rotators :stupid

The rotators are not performance orientated, a friend of mine did that a long time ago going by the same thought. What happened is the rotators will disintergrate and you'll have garbage all thru the motor. They weren't intended for heavy duty use!... :(
