Well I started building the 40 over 454 today, should finish the short block tomorrow.

When I was putting the rear main bearing in I noticed something that may have caused my bearing wipe out and maybe my high oil pressure(it was in excess of 80psi) . I put the bearing in and looked down at the oil hole it was blocked more than half way :eek then I flipped the bearing around and it lined up fine.

I'm pretty sure that I did not ck that on the first motor. Do you think that would cause a rod bearing failure and excessive oil pressure?

I dought it, If you put the bearing in the block the wrong way the bearing won't seat because of the tang not being in the slot and when you put the crank in and torque it down, the crank won't turn, bearings only go in one way!.. :eek  ;)

You should see how the brgs line up in my ford, I had to modify the front brg to oil the dist and cam gear, the last two to feed oil to the mains to keep the rods alive.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests???

Have you ever looked at the mains in an "FE" motor? :eek All the bearings cover half the oil hole, never could figure the reason for that, guess Ford wanted engine builders to earn their money detailing the blocks, I've spent a whole day detailing an "FE" block!.  :laugh

Miller, what I was telling KC is that the bearings go in one way only, the slots in the cap and block are only on one side and the tangs on the bearings must go in those slots, they are there to prevent the bearings from spining in the block. Did you put the main brgs in and torque the caps? then mic the inside dim?? also do that with the rods, use some hard wood in a vise so you dont damage the rods double check all your dims and if anything is too tight take a cut on the crank.

Noooooo, you don't cut the crank(unless you want to run abnormal clearances)!. :eek First you check the main bores (even if it has been line honed) to see if they are to spec, if that checks out then put the bearings in(after checking bearing thickness) and torque the caps down, mike the crank, set the dial bore guage to the mike and check clearances, if too tight, it's the bearings that are at fault, been down that road before!..  :eek  :D

Really?? what did you do to fix it?? I was told you could polish another .001 if you needed it.  Did you go thru a bunch of brgs till you found the right ones??

It's happened to me twice, block line honed, crank right on, check the mains in the block with a bore guage and one has less than .001 clearance=bad bearing!. :eek You could polish some off the crank but I just as soon put the right bearing in!. Maybe I was lucky but I just took it back and got another one and bingo, it measured up!. :D

Well its back together, just got to do the old E O I C and call it good :beer Allways a funny around me, I was about to install the intake and I was :eek Almost forgot to put the lifters in :beat And I haven't even had a beer yet  :drink

One snag is, Becky reminded me that we were going to change the steering cable while the motor is out cause it is almost impossible to install with the motor in. We found that out last time, had to kink the fock out of it to get it back in and it damaged it a little. So I'll hunt one down Monday I think Larrys Engine and Marine carries them.

Speaking of Larry's I was over there yesterday to pick up some head to block dowels and Doghouse from the HB forum had his motor on the dyno. He had had it going but lost the ignition system. Him and his buds were chasing down the problem had the lap top and all the cool shit hooked up, so I just stayed a bit and drooled :good way out of my league. Pretty cool, Larrys wife hooked me up on the dowels I talked with her a little about OPC6-V and she had heard about it from some of her friends :cool

It ran great with the rods knockin :confused I just want it to run and not knock   :good  I was never able to max it out and it was pulling really hard @ 4500 with about a quarter throttle to go :jumpie I'm hopin for around 65-70 mph lake loaded.  :alien

Soon enough, having to replace my steering system, they don't make a replacement cable no more, so they say at Larry's.
Probably stuff the motor this weekend and hit the lake in about 2 weeks.

So they don't make the cable, or Larry's just can't get it??  I always thought you could specify the cable length and rod ends you needed and you could get a cable.

Have you tried Rex Marine yet KC???

When Morse was bought out by Teleflex they started discountinuing some of the older stuff is what I've been told and also read some threads on Hotboat that stated the same story pretty much. The new system is about the same money as just buying a cable and then it will be new also    :good
