Did a few small things over the weekend :good Cams in, Thread's on the block are all cleaned and chased, set the heads on. Need to put on the oil pump and button up the bottom end. Maybe get it all together this weekend.

I'm guessing it's to provide a little oiling to the timing gear and chain....  :stupid

Two reasons, one is to supply oil to the chain and the thrust area between the gear and block, two is to blead air out of the system on start up. All big blocks come from the factory like that!.. :)

The plugs I removed from the original motor had no holes. And I don't ever remember seeing holes in any BBC I've played with. Not that I was looking for them though. Do they sell them with holes cause I don't want to drill those SS plugs. Is it a common mistake, error, oversight to replace them with sealed plugs.  :beat  :stupid

It is common to see that, a lot of first timers don't realize them and just put regular plugs in, in fact it happened to a friend of mine once, that was funny as hell. He didn't see those and when he put the motor back together he put one of them on the back of the block, what a surprise that was when he fired it up!. :laugh  :laugh Yeah you can buy them, they're not stainless though, any GM place should have them if not SCDC has them!. :good

Yes they do, it's just axtra lubrication. The main reason for them is to let air out at start up to prevent lifter clatter with hydraulics!..

Its going to come down to if I can find them in town. I want to button this thing up this weekend. I wanted to drop the motor in Sunday :banghead But thanks for the advice and wish me luck.

Well GM discontinued them by part number, and GM performance parts don't look like they have holes in them. Just regular 1/4" plugs. :stupid GM Performance

Or you could save a lot of hassle and just pickup a couple of 1/4" pipe plugs at the hardware store and drill a .035 hole in them!.. :)
