So the broken piece of the fitting is out, no wonder it broke it was only in about 1/8 of an inch :break The guy at Panther recomended running a tap thru it to clean the threads. So I did that and it went ok I guess. But when I thread a piece of 1/2 pipe in to it, it only wants to go in about 1/4 inch.

Are pipe threads tapered? If I run the tap thru the hole all the way through the hole(its about 1 inch thick) does that mess up the sealing characteristics of the pipe thread. Also should the tap be able to go all the way thru, it gets real tight towards the top of the tap. The bottom of the tap sticks out of the hole about 3/4".  

Heres a pick of the 3 threads that were in the pump. :(

Yes, both internal and external pipe threads are tapered. That's why you can't run your tap all the way through the hole. As long as there is enough meat in the part you are tapping, you should be able to tap it deeper. You should be much closer to full thread engagement. I would wait until you have the new part you are installing before doing so, however.  Use the new piece to gauge how far you need to go with the tap.

That explains alot. Full thread engaugement would be what on NPT? On bolts I think its the diameter of the bolt is minimum.

This is dragging up memories of school 30 years ago :laugh

I've found over the years that pipe fittings aren't all the same size depending on the MFG. So what I do is run the tap in almost half ways and then try the fitting(finger tight only) and see how far it will go in and that will give an idea how far I got to run the tap in. A proper depth would be to have 3-4 treads left when tight!.  :) :good
