Hey, I could use some advice... Im running an 86 carribean 20.6 semi v jet boat w/ harman marine 454 stock and berk jet.
Im getting 16-18 volts on the gauge when boat is running!! I had the alternator rebuilt and there is no seperate voltage regulator on board. It keeps overloading the electrical system and tripping the circuit breaker. could this be back feed from my stereo being grounded to the batteries? any help would be great thanks.... :banghead

Did you change anything or take the boat out when the prob started? Do have amps? If not prob one plug to take the stereo out of the mix.

What kind of alternator? GM one wire?

im not sure about the type of alternator.. I have two stereo amps hooked up plus a capisitor. I only took the boat out one time before the stereo was put in but had not looked at the volt meter that i can remember. the volt meter jumps 12-18volts or 16-18 volts constant even with the stereo off.and stereo is wired to batteries direct plus inline fuse and not thru circuit breaker... :confused

It sorta sounds like you have a voltage reg. problem... Check the voltage coming out of the alt with a meter.   Electrical problems usually cause a large draw but not a spike in voltage.  I would save yourself the hastle and just go buy a GM one Wire Alternator from Kraigen or something pop-it in and be done with it.  But you might want to get a higher amergage alt since you are running some good size stereo equipment.  

One other thing that I just thought of...
Is your capacitor wired into series?  If you wired it like two C batteries in a flashlight you could possibly get an increase in voltage?  (But I am likely wrong, but its a shot...)

I think its a voltage reg situation also . just any gm one wire alternator or do i need to find a specific marine or higher output alt?

Different people will tell you different things about alternators.  But "My Opinion" is that any One Wire will do.. It might not last as long as a marine one, but they are cheep (1/3 the price of a marine Alt) plus most auto stores give you a warranty on them (If you dont say its going in a boat).  I always use 74' Corvette for 454 part at those stores (otherwise they are lost).

You really should think about a higher amperage alt though if you are only running one batt and you want to run two stereo amps and a headunit...

Hey man thanks for the help Im gonna swap out the the alt and try to take it to elsinore this weekend or something to test it out...I run two batteries and a switch plus the capisitor helps with the draw when your cranking tunes on the beach. :beer

Ohh and just FYI...

GM one wire alternators dont always start charging at idle.  So if you start it and you are only at 12 volts dont trip out.  Give the engine a rev and you should see the reg. kick in and you volts just to 14. (That had me scratching my head the first time I installed one)

Your gauge should be amps (right?) and for a chevy they should norm run at 13.5   Hope you get it worked out  :good
