Just going by the piston picture, it looks like you could mill the shit out of that head if you had to. 
It could even be you may have a pinhole in the cylinder wall.  |
Well I got busy yesterday and didn't get the block out of the tank, maybe I'll get it out today but I didn't see any trace of a crack or hole anywhere in any of the cylinders and since there was no antifreeze in it, any water was visible  by a track of rust. I'm kinda leaning towards the head, it does look kinda thrashed!... I could mill the shit out of it but gotta be careful, the chain may end up too long and I don't know if they make a shorter chain for those, I'll have to look into that!.. |
Art, I've heard the same thing about milling the head. The guy at Bill's told me they take no more than .010 off the head because of that reason. They heat the heads and use a press to straighten them as close as possible then surface the head. I wondered if that would cause problems down the road but I guess it works. The one I put on is still A-OK. |
Well I'm going to put a new chain on it just to be on the safe side, think I'll lay the head down without a gasket and put the chain on and see how loose it is, that'll give me an idea how much I can cut!.. Since the head is alumunum, heating it to straighten it out won't hurt it but I sure wouldn't do it with an iron head, I hope this one ain't crooked though, don't want to spend a bunch of money on this thing!..

The first thing I looked for was a hole in the timing cover but it's a brand new one, when I took the pan off I found the old chain guides all in pieces laying in the pan and I figure the old chain kicked a hole in the cover, so that eliminated that idea!.. I think it's the head that's messed up, I'm going to pull the block out of the tank in a bit and see what it looks like and stick the head in and clean it up, maybe I'll find something!..
