Im just curious how often one should change the oil in the boat motor??

Just a refresher Im running a 496 with a jet... I changed the oil twice after breakin.  And I have run about 400 gallons through it or 5 two day trips.  Should I have changed it sooner???

I change mine at about the end of the season. I'm not so set on hrs. I think thats more frequent than required But I'm asking the same question about changing at the end of or at the start of the new season.
also with a jet you run more RPM than I do so that may matter

Well that depends on how hard you run it, if it's mostly cruising once a season is fine, but if you run the piss out of it all the time, wouldn't hurt to double up on it!..

Definatly I mostly cruise....  If I was "Running the Piss Outta In"  I would have burned way more gas!  It eats a shit pile of gas just cruizing (but thats at 3800) but if I floor it I can watch the gas gauge go down.  I think I get 3 gallons to the mile, so something to that effect :(

Well once a season is fine in that case!.  :good I think it's time to get a real boat though so won't have that fuel crisis!.. :D

I know this is a stupid question but I will ask anyways...

Will it do me any good economy wise to dump a 750cfm carb on there or will that just be too small? (Currently have a mighty demon 850)

I know that the jetting controlls the fuel but am I right, in that leaning out the jetting (too much)will damage the motor???

Sad to say but probably about 40-50% less gas with a prop over a jet. And A 750 would save you a little over the 850 cause it flows 100 less CFM. Lean air/fuel will hurt a motor but I don't think a smaller carb would. Think of the 850 hp Nascar motors running those 350cfm restrictor plates at 8000 rpm ;)

Yeah...  60 Gallons a day while just cruizing from needles to sand bar and around is rediculous...  But its still worth it :drink

Used oil has a small amount of corrosive junk in it, thats its job to collect the garbage and lubricate of course. It is recommended to change the oil in anything that takes oil if it is going to sit for a while. I would change it before you pull the tarp over it for the season. :good

at 3800-4000 rpm I'm running  50+ mph I don't usually cruise that fast so a prop. would save you the high rpm.

You will be under carbed with a 750 and you will lose power and that means you'll just be mashin the gas more so you won't use less fuel, in fact you may even use more????.. Have you checked the plugs??, maybe you could lean down a tad it may help some! :stupid

Anything will be better on fuel, back in the 80's when the kids were around I picked up a flat for towing the kids on skis and the tube and to cruise. I put a stock 468(except for a cam) in it and a bunch of gear, there were times I never went over 3000 rpm, I had two 10 gal tanks in it and I'd go all day Sat and most of the day on Sun and still had gas when I went home, never used more than 20 gals in a weekend, only time I did is if I ran the piss out of it, the boat went close to 80 at 5500, that's all she'd pull with the big gears but that was ok because the motor was not built for more!.. Of course this is in a 17' 6" flat, a cruiser will naturally be somewhat harder on fuel, but nowhere come close to 60gals a day, I couldn't live with that shit!.. Now if safety is a major concern, a v-drive is the safest since the prop is under the boat and not hanging out the back!. You should pull the motor out and put it in my buddy's Eliminator!.. :good

Even the boat I have now which is not made to cruise it's strictly a hot rod, I can still cruise at 2500 and I can go all the way from Fox's to the dam and all the way back down to Parker and back on little more than 5gals!.. :good
