SO I JUST BOUGHT THIS 1965 17' STEVENS FLAT BOTTOM AND I WANTED TO KNOW IF ANYONE COULD GIVE ME ANY ADVICE ON WHAT KIND OF PAINT TO USE AND WHERE WOULD I GET IT? I BOUGHT THIS BOAT AS A PROJECT AND EVEN THOUGH IT RUNS AND ALL IT NEEDS IS UPULSTRY, I WANT A NICE PAINT JOB YOU KNOW?

Welcome Roger, congrats on the new toy my first boat was a Stevens those are cool!. As far as paint goes depends mainly on how much $$$$$$$$$$$$ you want to spend, it can vary from a $300 "One-A-Day" to a $5000 "Billy B" paint job, or if you want to do it yourself!.. For just a plain paint job, I'd just use a Uretrhane with a ton of clear, the prep and finish will make the biggest difference on how it looks!. Should be able to get it at any local automotve paint supplier!.. :good

SO THEN WOULD ANY KIND OF AUTOMOTIVE PAINT WORK THEN? BECAUSE I'VE BEEN PRICING THEM AND HAVE DECIDED TO DO IT MYSELF. ALSO, DO I HAVE TO USE A SEPERATE OR SPECIAL PAINT FOR THE BOTTOM? :confused

Yep pretty much so but the key word here is "PREP"if you want it to turn out right!.. Use the same on the bottom just polish it out real good afterwards so you don't have any flaws whatsoever, the least flaw and the water will peel the paint off quicker than you can blink an eye. After you polish it you could lay a coat of SpeedCoat(Graphite) from about the kickboard on back, it will make the bottom slick(less drag)and protect the paint!.. :good

HEY THANK YOU SO MUCH! IT DOES'NT SOUND SO CONFUSING TO ME NOW. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU HAD TO SPEND CRAZY AMOUNTS OF MONEY FOR A ONE COLOR SIMPLE PAINT JOB! BUT NOW I FEEL AS IF I HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING. THANKS A BUNCH. ALSO, I'M PRETTY SURE I HAVE A CASALE DRIVE, BUT I WAS WONDERING IF IT WAS NORMAL TO ONLY BE ABLE TO SHIFT IN AND OUT OF GEAR WITH THE MOTOR SHUT OFF. I CAN WITH IT ON BUT I DON'T LIKE THE GRINDING SOUND THAT IT MAKES. I HAVE A 327 4 BOLT MAIN CHEVY IN IT AND IT SEEMS TO RUN REALLY STRONG. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT HAS DONE TO IT AS THE OWNER BEFOR ME DID'NT EVEN KNOW THAT THE BOAT WAS CALLED A FLAT BOTTOM V-DRIVE!

You're welcome, if you're capable of doing everything yourself then it doesen't cost that much, it's the "prep" that takes hours and hours to do and that's what costs the most when you pay for a good paint job!... If everything is original in the boat, you probably have a a Casale top loader and they are not meant to be put in gear when running, all they have is a two dog engagement into two slots and you will round off the edge or break them putting it in gear while running, you can take it out of gear while running though. If you just bought this, I would suggest putting in a fresh batch of oil in it and check the bearings since this guy didn't even know what he had, I'm sure he didn't check anything!... Let's see some pics of the boat and hardware!.. :good

THANKS AGAIN! AND I'LL GET ON THOSE PICS AS SOON AS I CAN. I ORIGINALLY WANTED A JET OR AND OUTBOARD, BUT IT SEEMS TO ME LIKE YOU GET YOUR BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK OUT OF A V-DRIVE UH? I ALSO DON'T SEE TOO MANY PEOPLE CRUISING THEESE THINGS AROUND? OH AND WILL A LUCAS PRODUCT WORK OK FOR THAT GEAR BOX OF MINE? OR WILL IT HAVE TO BE A MARINE GRADE PRODUCT?

Yes, they are the best bang for the buck but you have to remember it's a flat not a v so cruising in comfort is limited to smoother water, with a V you can cruise in rough water in comfort, they sure are easy on gas though!.. The v-drive is just another gear box just like a rear end in a car and it don't know where it's at, any good 85-90 gear oil will work fine. If you're not water cooled you can use a syntethic that will let it even run cooler!..BTW, the word "Marine" is just another word for more $$$$$$$$$$$!..

OKAY, SO I'VE BEEN GOIN AROUND AND DOING SOME RESEARCH ON WHAT KIND OF PAINT AND I CAME ACROSS ANOTHER EBAY WONDER :confused

AND THOUGHT I'D ASK ABOUT THIS KIND OF PAINT AND CLEAR COAT. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. I'M REALLY TRYING TO MAKE THIS AS PAINLESS AS POSSIBLE WITH THE PAINT JOB AND I UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE PREP ASPECT OF THE WORK. OK SO I JUST TESTED OUT THE LINK I PUT UP AND IT DID'NT WORK! SO JUST SO YOU KNOW THE PAINT IS "DOLPHONITE ACRYLIC LAQUER BOAT PAINT" AND IF YOU TYPE IN "BOAT PAINT" UNDER "ALL CATEGORIES" IT'S THE FIRST THING TO POP UP. SORRY BOUT THE CONFUSION AND THANK YOU.

Anytime I every used Laquer paint I allways cleared it and buffed it. Also dries quicker. There is alot to painting and like GFR says prepping is most of it.

Good ole KC getting right to the point!..

Well I'm far from a paint expert in fact I hardly know anything about it, but from what I've seen and talked to people about paint, it seems like the Urethane is the way to go these days, but lacquer has been around forever too so I guess it's just a matter of preference!.. :stupid

cool so thanks for the info and the caps.... well, thats kinda my online thing I guess, but since you asked me too, for the purpose of information I'll get rid of it. but thanks for all your help. oh and how much paint do you think I'll need? i want a real simple white paint job with a little black around the top so do you think one gallon of white will do the entire boat bottom and top?

Well I would think it would take more than 1gal?? but I'd figure the square footage and see what the coverage is on the can, or call up a paint shop they should be able to tell you!..

Get 2 gallons, I painted a 18ftr a long time ago, didn't paint the bottom and used every bit of 3/4's of a gallon and it should have had one more coat. I'll bet you'll use 1 1/2 gallon easy. Then you'll have some left for touch ups later.

So I can get away with not painting the bottom? I mean i know that I should, but being that I have a small budget, just masking off the bottom and only painting the top would be acceptable? and how many coats do you think that I will need? oh and thanks for helping me out with that link. Do you think that dolphin paint stuff will work?

I would say that you would neeed 1 1/2 -2 gallons. I would caution against getting the paint that you are llloking at on EBAY. I would find something local to you and in a standard color (Not Cusom). The reason for this is, if you need to make a touch up or repair, the chances of matching the color are better, and if you run into a problem, they should be able to help.

You don't have to do the bottom but I would check it for flaws that water can get into, water will peel paint and fiberglass away!..

Ok! finally! here they are! so tell me what you guys think. now remember, the boat was dirt cheap and it has the prop with no dings in it, it starts right up no problem, it has the original bench seats but i pulled them out because they need to be re-done so give me your thoughts and suggestions. thanks a bunch guys.
