I have seen them where you could push the sides in from corrosion over the years, they were paper thin!.  |
I'd be interested in seeing how bad the insides of one was, if it was eaten up that bad on the outside.  I know outside appearance isn't really a great indicator of what the insde looks like. But if it was that bad, I would bet it had problems inside too!
As far as the original poster's question goes, as someone else has stated, if it isn't pitted very much or at all, just check the gear lube.  As long as it doesn't look milky or have a burnt smell to it, it should be just fine.  You can take care of the outside looks with some work.  Also, another good indicator of how the lower unit is to see how much slack it has in it when you engage the gears.  I've seen outboards sit in the water for several years here in VA and back home in TN, and some in water that had high mineral content, and they still performed just as well as ones that came out of the water after every use.  My parents' first or second houseboat had been in the water for 7 or 8 years, and it still ran as well as any I've ever seen.
