OK  :angry I'm broke again. Not sure whats up yet, was running fine for the first hour idling around at 1500 to 2000 rpm, then we decided to get her up on plane and every thing was cool then it kick back thru the carb and died   :eek Cked for spark while the wind blew us towards the marina, seems a little to yellow, but there is spark. Need to double ck if its getting fuel, I saw some dripping but never really verified a good squirt from the carb. Going to pull the valve covers and ck the valve adjustment out.

If this thing was a horse I'd shoot it  :guns All in good fun I guess but damn  :angry

Oh yeah, The funny... If you've run your boat on the hose at home don't forget to hook it back up to the pump  :eek  :eek
That thing will fill your bilge pretty damn fast :laugh

KC- thats a bummer.... It kills me to see a project going on like yours and ya get it done, launch the boat, wife's in the pic with the boat on the beach, and then I see the PWC in front, but it wasn't cutting you off it was towing you.  Bummer.

OK I can't resist......... A Mercury 300 would push your boat over 80 I bet and you would have alot of free time not working on it.... :good  :good  :good

Number 8 plug and the hole has zero compression. Jeez I wonder why :guns

Fock this thing, I'm not sure if its the valve or the piston or the cylinder that is causing no compression :beat I can't decide to whether take it apart, put it away for awhile, burn it, sell it, or give it away    :puke



Also I've got water in the oil and there was water on all 7 & 1/2 plugs. My attitude towards this boat is about as bad as when you realize you should get a divorce :fight

It looks like something went through the cylinder looking at the plug(no sh!t) . The electrode is completely gone either knocked out or fell out. I'm thinking of pulling the head to inspect to see if its block or  head causing the no compression, maybe it just bent a valve (I doubt this very much) But if I decide to dump it and move on, I'd rather keep it all in one piece so the new owners can see how it goes together.

Things just don't get any better, I'll        :drink think about what I'm going to do........stay tuned

I really dont want to bring you down but by the look of your spark plug I would guess you had your timming way to far advanced and burned a hole in that piston. what was the water temp showing. and oil presure. what puzzles me is the water in the oil. If you burned the piston,material may have exited thru the exuast valve and bent it. Ive been reading all the threads about your motor it seemed you had it together good. I would try one more time and then if that engine wont hold together sink the boat and collect the insurance money. If you have any questions let me know. good luck.  :good

Water temp and oil pressure were 140 and 70psi, timing may have been an issue but none of the other plugs showed problems other than the water on them and it cranked really easy and fired right up. I'll pull the head tomorrow and see what the hell is going on in there. :break

Sorry to see that, looks like the valve just gave up or something else happen and the valve hit the piston then broke?. :confused

Shit KC, sorry to see what happened.  

I've seen a couple engines swallow valves, and you know what?  The amount of time on them made no difference, in fact most of them were on lower time motors.  I think it's a QC issue from the manufacturer than anything else, just my .02.

Looks like the blue Hawaiian is just having a string of bad luck, I know how that feels.   :beat

Bad luck is a tradition around me here lately. I with you on valve failure, QC on mass produced parts is slim to none. I was running a little more compression on this short block, that may have help   :break

I'm going with the fatigue thing, the heads were something I did not do anything with other than changing springs, rockers and fresh seals. The cam is/was pretty aggresive and the springs are pretty stout. I think the valves were just your basic stock Chevy stuff with to many hours on them, I'll bet if I just patched it back together I'd see a failure of one of other valves.

I'm shopping around for some heads right now but I think I'm going to have to get the block bored after the way that valve head banged around in the bore before it found it's happy place shoved in the valve seat     :break

Yeah, sounds like fatigue to me also.  Most of my experiance with valve problems has been with airplanes, that mostly comes from people running the engines to lean.  But it takes a relatively long time (10 - 100 hrs) for the problems to surface, and we find those on a compression check.  Hopefully before the valve takes a ride around the inside of the engine.

Automotive (or marine) wise, the ones I've seen fail are newer valves, and the metal just doesn't look right at the break, like a manufacturing defect or QC problem with the material used in the valve.

You mean stay away from cat, scat, eagle?? and other fine chinese junk?

I go to a mopar site and these guys are gun ho for that junk, specially the rods cuz they are cheap, I just ask them why they dont spend the money on a good set of light pistons and pins and have the stock rods reworked and run it. :beat
