Hello everyone,

Im getting ready to start ordering the parts for my boat engine. Its a 454 Big Block Chevy. What I am wondering, is what kind of heads and cam combo does everyone have, and how do they like it? I am probably going to stick with cast iron heads due to the heat retension abillity of iron over aluminum, but Im curious to see what everyone has and how they like it.

Its my first big block and my first boat, so any info would be appreciated.

pretty much I am building it like a hot rod. Its a small boat, and once the seats are done itll only seat 5 max on a good day, so Im wanting to build a little speedster. I would like to be able to do between 70-80 mph. Not that ill do it all the time, I just want to know that It can do it you know. What ya think?

Well, from your description and MPH you want, A set of 049 heads cleaned up with the big valves, a hydraulic/solid cam "around' 550 lift, 230 duration, an airgap manifold with an 800 carb, you didn't mention what kind of gas you plan on running, but I'd keep compression at 10-10.5 max!.. That should get you in the area you want and still be tame, "BUT" that's providing the bottom is straight and the pump is setup "right"!. I knew a guy with a Southwind that ran 78 with a similar combination, it was a 468!.. :good

Today I picked up a set of 3993820 casting heads. They are in much better shape and the ports are huge comapred to the peanut port ones I took off. :-) I am planning on running 91 octane, and occasionally maybe c16 or what not.

Are the holley marine carbs any good? My friend has one he told me hell sell me. He never used it. Its an 850 with vacuum secondaries, and it doesnt have those weird little J tubes for the bowl vents. Its a single pumper dual feed. What are your thoughts on those?

Yep, get rid of those peanut heads they hold you back big time. Put the big valves in and do a clean up, "no hogging out", just round off all the sharp edges and blend everything and get rid of any casting junk in the ports, then gasket match the intakes and the manifold!... With 92 gas you can go 11 to 1 comp as long as you don't go nuts on timing then you could mix it 50/50 with Avgas then you bump the timing up!.. That carb is perfect and will be easier on gas than a double pumper, I would grab that if I were you, how much does he want for it???..

Pretty good deal if it's in good shape. Won't hurt accelaration one bit, with the secondaries tuned properly by the time the motor is under full load the secondaries will be full open, but under cruise or part throttle accelaration the secondaries will open only according to the needs of the motor instead of dumping excess fuel for nothing. If it was a drag race only deal then a D/P would be ok!..

If they are rectangular ports then they are not 049's, the 049's are oval ports!..
