Is it normal for the timing to jump around with a point style ignition?

The last time I was at the lake my boat was not running as strong as it did before and 87 Cole recommended that I advance the timing a little bit. I could have sworn that the last time I set my timing it was set at 38 at 3000 but when I checked it; it was at 30 at 3000. I bumped it back up to 38 now but is it normal for it to shift around like that?

Sounds like your dwell changed(point gap) or your advance plate is sticking, might want to check that. If you don't have the right grease on the point cam, the rubbing block will wear quick and the gap closes and that will change the timing. Hope this helps!.. :good

What kind of Grease goes on the point cam? I didn’t put any on there so that may be it.

I think its a dielectric type, it normally comes with the point set. Time to step up to hopped up HEI or MSD system   :good

Don't think it would stick around long. The stuff I used to use was red in a little packet. Ck with your engine guy I bet he knows what its called, or maybe a local parts house. I haven't used points for quite a while so I'm kinda spacey on the exact stuff to use was called   :alien

Yea,I'd go with the electronic if I were you...mine has the MSD (came that way),nice to have one less thing to worry about (points burning,dwell adjustments,etc...),no problems ignition wise in three seasons... :good

Noooooooooooooooo!  Correct answer is above... dielectric grease, designed for points.  Good parts house should have it.  Also GM dealer... Delco Part # 1948792 - U1901 distributor cam lubricant.  It's a big tube.  

If you can't find it let me know and I'll squirt some in a little plastic bag and mail it to you.  (yes, serious).  I have a big tube of it that I only use rarely.  And you use very little of it on the dist cam (obviously clean the cam first).  

IMO a points type distributor (properley adjusted and maintained) with a good coil is every bit as good as the high buck MSD stuff "on a jetboat motor that does not see real high RPM".  Properly lubricated points will go a long time with average boat use without wearing significantly.

That brings up another question. My coil looks like it is 20 years old. Should I replace it? Everything else in my ignition system I have replaced, points, condenser, cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. If I should replace it how do I pick one? I see tons of them in the catalogs but am not sure what exactly makes a good coil and what makes a bad one?  :stupid

Without getting all trick and stuff, just a Hi-perf auto coil should be fine for your setup. Their pretty basic, I've all ways had good luck with Accel, MSD, or Mallory. I'm not much of a fan of the chrome ones though, they seem to get really hot and I've had some crazy wire shorting problems with them   :break

Miller, since you're not running a race motor with RPM's to the moon, any good quality stock type coil will do fine, no need to waste money on high dollar race stuff. Those Accel yellow coils are great and they are cheap, perfect your application!.. :good

Miller I'd suggest the MSD 8222 Hi Vibration Coil.  Not high buck, but excellent coil and you can mount in any position.  In stock $39.95.  

You will need a ballast resistor running points but you probably already have it.

I spent all morning running around my house trying to find my Rex catalog to order one. But then I remembered I don’t have a catalog!  :D
I have a ballast resistor currently so I should be set there.  I would like to get that coil from you mike what is the best way to order it?  :good

Are all ballast resistors .8 ohms?  Or do I need to measure mine to make sure it is the same as the ones for the MSD coil.

The web page says that points distributors  require the ballast resistor in the kit in addition to any original resistor. Do I need two resistors in series? I am a little confused here  :stupid

I just went out and read through the coil instructions and it specifies a .8 ohm resistor only, (not in addition to).  This is verified on the wiring diagram they include with the coil for points application.  

So I would just put an ohmeter on your resistor and see what it is.  If it's not .8 ohm I'd replace it with MSD 8214 to insure the coil works properly and doesn't overheat or have proper output.  I have one 8214 resistor in stock.

Doug, I've been doing alot of price research online lately with the addition of several automotive and SUV product lines here.  Summit is only cheap on the hot movers within a product line and typically the higher dollar items.  The thing they can't offer is much hands on tech assistance because most their phone guys are order takers and that's it.  They do a great job with product distribution, along with Jegs, and others, but there are more and more small companies eating away at them all now.  Plus their website isn't the greatest on some things from a tech standpoint.  In these cases it requires the customer to do the tech research from the mfgr's site or somewhere else before buying from Summit.  An extra step.  I see this tech deficiency in several online store websites.  

You'll be seeing more additions to our online store website real soon.  Working on Auto Meter right now.  the address is http://shopping.rexmar.com.   K&N is up now and being used as an operational test to make sure we have all the bugs out.
