A biker beef of unknown proportion appears heading for Kingman this weekend. The Chairman of the Arizona Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs (ACMC) is predicting a huge turnout to protest that several establishments have adopted a "no patch" and "no colors" policy which prohibits displays of motorcycle club affiliations by those who enter their premises.

"We're expecting probably between 1,000 and 2,000 riders," said ACMC Chairman Ray Fitzgerald, who said members of 41 clubs in Arizona are encouraged to participate. ``I've been told there will be more and I was keeping the number low as we have people coming in from Nevada and California as well."

Police Chief Bob Devries said those involved with the planned protest have not communicated with City officials who have no idea how many bikers or what to expect. He said several bars and restaurants have adopted the "no colors" rule as part of their right to refuse service to any patron.

``Some of those did it on their own volition and that was based upon some of the behavior of the individuals inside their establishments and we fully respect their decision," Devries said. He said it only becomes a law enforcement matter when
a motorcycle club member in violation of the prohibition refuses to leave at the request of personnel at the business in question.

Devries noted that a man was killed in a hammer and gun fight during a Labor Day weekend colors-related dispute between bikers in Tucson. ``We're trying everything we can here in the community to prevent these types of things from happening," he said.

Just 40 miles from Kingman, three people were killed and dozens were seriously injured when members of the rival Hells Angels and Mongols motorcycle clubs brawled inside a Laughlin casino in April, 2002.

Fitzgerald, who goes by the nickname of "Still Ray", said the "no colors" policy is discriminatory. He said motorcycle enthusiasts are upset that some of the Kingman businesses that once welcomed their patronage have posted the policy.

Fitzgerald said the bikers will have a Saturday meeting at the American Legion Hall in downtown Kingman and plan to visit one of the "no-colors" establishments in a peaceful demonstration to make a point.

``That's exactly right, it's exercising our Constitutional rights as far as lawful assembly," Fitzgerald said.

Devries said the Police Department has communicated with other law enforcement agencies, but that it's difficult to prepare for the unkown. ``We'll have full staffing in regards to the patrol beats as well as we're modifying some schedules at this point in the event that there is some form of a large scale protest," Devries said.

Fitzgerald said bike club members don't write many letters to legislators but turn out for cause-based road trips.

``If you tell them we're going for a ride and we're going to do a peaceful demonstration to protest discrimination, then every club member that can possibly make it will make it," Fitzgerald said.

They should call it the Ride To Nowhere. Nowhere is where this is going. All the bars and other business have the right to refuse anybody at any time, colors or not.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting outside an east-side bar, police said Tuesday.
John Majalca was involved in a violent assault Friday night of a 24-year-old man outside the bar, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.
During the assault, the victim pulled out a firearm and shot one of his assailants, police said.
Majalca is facing charges of aggravated assault with serious injury or dangerous instrument, attempted aggravated robbery, attempted armed robbery and first-degree murder.
The fight left Shawn Conrad 27, dead of gunshot wounds.
Conrad was involved in the fight in the parking lot of the Cow Pony Bar, 6510 E. Tanque Verde Road, said Sgt. Diana Lopez, a police spokeswoman.
Here is LopezÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s account of what happened:
Conrad and several other men got into an altercation with a 24-year-old man.
Conrad and the other men assaulted the 24-year-old, Lopez said. One of the men had a weapon, Lopez said, but she would not say what type.
The 24-year-old pulled out a handgun and shot Conrad, Lopez said.
A search warrant document filed in connection with this case shows police recoved a hatchet, stun gun and several hammers from a property in the 3600 block of S. Eighth Avenue. Also recovered were a belt buckle and shirt with Ã¢â‚¬Å“81Ã¢â‚¬Â on them. This number can refer to the Hells Angels motorcycle gang.
Gang detectives are investigating the shooting.
Majalca was sentenced in 2004 to 2.5 years in state prison for weapons misconduct, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections Web site. He was released in 2006.
