I need to replace the wood for my trailer bunks.  What kind should I get?  Should I apply any treatments or sealers to the wood before I carpet it? :stupid

Doug, I would treat whatever you buy with some kind of sealer, otherwise that wood will eventually start to warp and crack. Remember that since they are carpeted, the wood has a hard time drying after it has gotten wet. It is a small investment to make sure that you dont have to do it again in the near future. -DD

We took the ol' Glastron down to PACIFIC TRAILERS in Chino on a Saturday.....they replaced the bunks and adjusted everything for about $80.....

They used a forklift sling to lift the boat off the trailer...whole job was done in less than 2 hrs.... :good

I replaced the bunks on my waveruuner trailer.  I used regular wood from like Home Depot, but before I put the carpet on I treated it with some kind of water repellant wood sealer.

Or just buy marine grade 2x4's and the carpet...either way $80 is a bargain. :good

Actually you don't want to use the pressure treated because of all the little perforations from the treatment.  From what I have heard those little holes hold the water and it will rot out quicker than a regular non-pressure treated board.  Apparently the pressure treated is designed to resist regular moisture, not be dunked in the lake on a regular basis.   :D

Your best bet is some regular kiln dried fir or something along those lines.  Slap some Thompsons on it and carpet it and be done.   ;)

However, in your case KC, you could use any kind of wood, not treat it with anything, and it would probably last 100 years at the rate you're going with the schedule of splashing your blue canoe again. But actually if I can help you in any way please give me a call    :beer  :good  :D

What ever Focktard :ass :laugh  At least I got the Thompsons right :bebe I would put still money on the pressure treated than kiln dried lasting longer especially out here in the desert they dry pretty dam quick. oh and  :bebe  :D

You have to get the trailer wet in order for it to need to dry out.   :stupid  :beer  :rotflmao

Do what you like, but it's been brought up time and time again on Hotboat about not using pressure treated.  Leave it to one of the Tucson crew to go about it all backwards.   :beer  :rotflmao  :good

You are better off using a good grade of Douglas fir with no treatment if you don't want to use the marine lumber.

The Thompson's is a solvent based polymer that is not very friendly to plastics..including vinyl and polyester resins, epoxy resins and the backings used on alot of carpet. Even after the solvent evaporates the base material will be there in the wood when it gets all wet and covered with wet carpet which will be pressed up against the boat under a fair amount of pressure, it can discolor the hull. :eek

I built a ton of dock boxes over the years and when somebody gets overzealous and starts splashing around Thompson's instead of treating with something like chemonite,  they wonder why it discolors. :stupid

Why wood anyway....???  How about fiberglass/plastic....???  That way you only have to re-carpet every few years...!!! :good

My old bubble deck and I would assume your V-drives actually "float" onto the trailer....not need to "slide" on carpet....

How was their work? We have a smashed fender (Carlisle blow out) that needs to be fixed but I figured we would have the whole trailer blasted and repainted while were at it. Open to sugestion and referrals if anyone knows of a good shop
