I am thinking about buying my first diesel truck.. And I dont know anything about them so I have seen that some on here have them and I need more info...

What kind of mileage can I expect?  Towing and not?
What are the pros and cons of diesel?

I want to get a toy hauler and I need something to pull it :)

My suggestion is a GM product, the Duramax/Alison combo cannot be beat IMO.

Yesterday I drove to LA and back and got over 18mpg, my truck is bone stock, I will be adding the Edge EZ to it and can expect at least 20mpg after I put it on, I will also add an exhaust and gauges soon. I get 15 back and forth to work, nearly 5mpg better then what I got with my BB that I had before the Diesel. Personally I will never own another gas truck again. Only downfall in my eyes is that we are paying premium fuel prices for un-refined fuel, that's BS if you ask me...

Ditto.... Fuel prices are BS. I have a 1st gen Duramax/Allison its a crew cab dully 4x4 and I can get 21 mpg on the highway empty and 19-20 loaded just depends on how many slow moving cars I have to pass. I like any of the diesels out there today, the 6.0L Ford is a powerhouse it will snap your head back when you punch it. But my complaint with the Ford is there soft rear suspension, be prepared to add air bags or some kind of other leveling device. I also think there Auto trans is a POS. The Cummins will last for 300-400K Miles easy but most of us dont want to keep a truck longer than a couple of years. The Dodge Auto Trans is also a POS. I think about it this way, Diesels= Big Torque, Extreme Heat and punishing treatment thats what they are designed for shouldent the rest of your drivetrain be able to handle the abuse? Duramax/Allison is my choice. My .02

I have a 4runner gas v8 now and the best I can do in 16-17 mpg but with my boat its 8-12...  And I cant tow a toy hauler, or a travel trailer :(

My son-in-law just got a great deal on an F250. I'm not sure what they call it..Crewcab?.it has four doors and is huge inside.

We had a toyhauler drag race and he blew my V-1o away....(I knew he would, but by how much was the amazing thing)
But I was about 3000 lbs heavier than him (That's my story and I'm sticking to it).

He is lined up to get a Banks package next. :good

It's a fact of Life:

After Monday and Tuesday, even the Calendar says : WTF .......

You probably know my choice :D today the GM has the edge on the market, Ford is getting ready to do a major "facelift" on their F250/350 line up but are having so much trouble with their replacement motor for the failing 6.0 that they have pushed it back. They also have had the largest number of "buybacks" and warranty work on it. the new 5 speed seems ok but is still a some what new  part.  

Dodge cummins is the best motor on the block with the most potential for longevity. but it has a week auto trans.


the next new truck to come out will do there best to top the Duramax / Allison Combo. But today I think it is the bust package.


as far as gas VS. diesel the last truck I had was a 1992 bb Chevy dually, and I don't think todays V10 or 8.1 gets any better milage than I got, 10 towing a boat and 14 just the truck. they may have changed the motor but I don't feel they have helped out with milage.

also friends brag about their gas suburban getting 22+ on the highway, and my diesel dosen't  :stupid They have a half ton 5.3l small block if you compare equal trucks the diesel works out better.


I ramble but thats my .02 :D

That's kinda what I'm saying, '92 with a 454 was about the same. you would think they would have made them more efficient :stupid why make the change if you don't get any benefit?

2000 excursion w/7.3

2006 C2500 w/6.6

both trucks tow better with less water temp. than the 454

But too bad there isnt a cummins w/allison...

My friends have the Duramax with the Allison, and I have the 496 (8.1) gas with the Allison.

A legit and on the level take:
The diesels get about 4 mpg better overall mileage than me.

I think Killertoy mentioned someplace ya start seeing the economy hit the family budget around 60.000k.

Not sure if the extra cost of oil changes was figured in.

The only gripe I hear from the diesel owners - that had the same rig with gas before they switched to a diesel - was low end power (holeshot) was noticably less with the diesel.

Another plus is it's expected the diesel engines to last twice as long.

The newer Allison (World 1000) has some Major improvements.
It's far quieter operation, though I bought a first run production original and have no noise complaints here.

It's now a 6 speed, and they've really beefed it up.
All kinds of improvements.

70.000 hard hot and high towing on mine and it is tits.

They see Japan on the horizon, and they have to offer something built to last.

Neighbor bought the new Dodge, but had to get the manual trans,, and that seems like too much thinking and work on the road. The squeeze isn't hep to shifting with a 17.000 lb rig behind her either, along with the noise and smell.

She wants to be changing CD's, not gears.

Rumor Ford, Chrysler and GM will all offer the Allison soon.
Just rumor.

any older diesel with a tuner kit has as good or better "holeshot" as a gasser. and the newest trucks have had most of the "turbo lag"tuned out by computer controlled turbos.

And I can't belive how quiet the 06 is :stupid  my old 454 made more noise. and the 7.3 sounds like an old cummins next to it.

the wife will have now trouble learning to drive it, there is no throttle lag when making a left turn across traffic like the older ones did.

I have a line on wholesale prices if you are willing to order one and wait six weeks. :good

I just got my new truck at work, an F350 with a diesel and the 5 speed auto and I gotta say..."I'm impressed!"  The thing is heavy as hell, crew cab and a long bed with a utility camper shell on the back, plus it's four wheel drive, but it flat out moves.  I've towed some of our boats and they're pretty heavy, and it pulls hard.  If I still had a heavier boat and neede the power, I'd definately trade the Hummer in for a diesel.  I don't have anything to compare with though, so I don't know which one is best.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning kills boaters.  Take the time to learn about it and how to avoid it.

Detroit Diesel/Allison was bought by Daimler Chrysler last year so never know. If Dodge starts using the Allison I will buy one.

I'm going to buy the tallest tire I can for my truck to give me a few more MPH at 2100 RPM. I don’t know about the new ones but if I cruise over 2100 my mileage drops significantly.

75 mph is about 1900 rpm with the 6 speed. and that number is true for my 7.3 also anything over 70 kills milage

A legit and on the level take:
The diesels get about 4 mpg better overall mileage than me.

The only gripe I hear from the diesel owners - that had the same rig with gas before they switched to a diesel - was low end power (holeshot) was noticably less with the diesel.

Another plus is it's expected the diesel engines to last twice as long.

I see all of those deisl tuners on  TV that are supposed to help with mpg... I curious if they really help at all?

any older diesel with a tuner kit has as good or better "holeshot" as a gasser. and the newest trucks have had most of the "turbo lag"tuned out by computer controlled turbos.

And I can't belive how quiet the 06 is :stupid  my old 454 made more noise. and the 7.3 sounds like an old cummins next to it.

the wife will have now trouble learning to drive it, there is no throttle lag when making a left turn across traffic like the older ones did.

I have a line on wholesale prices if you are willing to order one and wait six weeks. :good

75 is 2100 for me with my current setup. Most of the time I don't run around on the freeway anyways but when I do I pay for it if I push it. What gears did you get with yours Stingray?

3.73 and I ran it up then got it to traffic so that may not be accurite this weekend we are headed to the marketplace in OC so I'll have more freeway to play on. :good

But so far I'm happy as hell :good  :good  :good
