PFDs do save lives....take the extra step and BUCKLE IT ON...!!!

The Sad Story:

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - Other boaters did not see a father and son enter the water before they both drowned over the weekend, leaving investigators with little way of knowing what happened, the county sheriff said.

David S. Knisley, 28, of Indianapolis, and his 6-year-old son, Brandon Knisley, were found dead in the White River Sunday afternoon after they had been fishing from a two-seat pontoon boat on the calm, wide area of the river.

Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Carter he believed David Knisley either jumped in to save his son or fell from the boat trying to rescue him.

"We'll never know for sure, but I think the little boy fell out and the dad spun around to get to him," Carter said Monday. "Neither one of them were very good swimmers."

Neither was wearing a life jacket as they were boating in the rural area about 15 miles north of Indianapolis, state conservation Officer John Gano said.

The pontoon appeared to be in good working order, but Gano said such boats had a reputation of tipping over because of their light weight.

Cater said the deaths were a sign of the need for safety measures by boaters.  "The use of those lifejackets, it's just so darn critical," he said.

Very sad indeed :( Just proves that "speed" is NOT the only reason to wear a jacket!.. I rest my case!.. :)

Ya know for years it was jump in the lake swim around, go cliff diving, swim across the cove, and never wear a PFD. Then I got a cramp once in deep water and it freaked me out. Now there is PFD on me alot more. You never know and it happens quick.  :(

whats sad is that these two deaths could have been prevented. I see alot of things like this in my line of work, My two boys never even get close to the boat or water without thier PFD, evan though they are great swimmers.
