Try this...

Start
All Programs
Accesories
System Tools
System Restore
Restore System to earlier date
Choose a date about a week before your puter got messed up
Follow prompts

If that doesnt work, youll need the original start-up disk that came with the puter. Insert disc & restart. Follow prompts.
CAUTION this method wipes out everything saved. Your starting all over.

Hope the first method works for you.

I tried to restore it by going through the start menu (the way you first mentioned) but it only comes back with en error message saying it cannont restore it to that date.
I'm not a computer whiz so I'm going to ask a stupid question..... would my original start up disk be called Microsoft office xp small business.

No, you'll use that disk to re-install Micro Soft office.

If you don't have a start-up disk, (it will be labled "Windows Start-Up" or something like that), you can make one.  Microsoft has instructions on their website on how to go about it.

What you will end up doing is reformating your hard drive (i.e. earasing it and starting over from scratch).  You will then need to re-install all of your software.  You should have gotten all the CD's when you got your computer.  The cool think is you can chose not to install some of the programs from the factory, especially if it's a Dell.

Anyway, before you do the boot disk dealio, save all the files that you want first, because once your done, they will gone.

It's not really hard to do, just take your time and you should be fine.

Just know that those files you save might be corrupt so be careful when you reinstall.

It's kind of like killing a fly with a sledge hammer, but sometimes that's what has to be done.

To help keep this from happening again, keep your antivirus up to date, and download a couple of the free spyware programs (Spybot and Adware are the most popular) and run them a few times a week.

Sleek is right on :beer target about spyware infesting your system.

Here are the download pages for Ad-Aware and Spybot

Run these programs separately and you will get rid of about 98% of the crap screwing up your system. I also use them weekly! :good

We have been using Norton Internet Security for two years.  Rock solid...Stops everything (so far)....

Had many of the same issues, including a bug in my email that would auto-send 100's of messages a MINUTE...!!! :angry

The freebie's will clean it up short-term, but get Norton or McAffee to fix it right.   :good

Mac, you are kidding right. :laugh Besides Spybot and AdAware, Yahoo has a good free program called Anti-Spy that works great. But if you have Win98 you need to get a Firewall, XP has one built in and it cuts 95% of the BS out but you still can bring the crap in without knowing it!.. Store bought puters come with a "Recovery" CD with everything on it(hate them fkn things)and usually they have a "Repair" funtion that can get you running again without formatting, then you can run software to clean it up.. Another area that needs attention now is the Registry, spyware takes over that part and even running AdAware and the others, the Registry is still fkd up!. You can download a trial version of "Registry Mechanic" and run it to clean it up, be surprised how it will run afterwards. Then run Scandisk and Derfag, you'll think it's a new machine!.. :good

BTW, Norton is the worst thing you can have, you think pop ups are bad, Norton will completely take over your computer on ya and it will drive you nuts!.. McAffee is pretty good, but you can get a free one (AVG)that's just as good with free updates!.. :good

I agree :good  Art's got it nailed (Once again :beer  )

And espcially on the Norton thing.  I've been in this business for a year or two :D  and never liked Norton, nor will I ever.  Like GFR said, I use AVG Antivirus myself and it catches everything and doesn't slow down my computer like Norton would....
I also use Spybot and Popup Stopper.  All 3, AVG, Spybot, and Popup Stopper, are free programs that you can download.

And, just for the record here, the "oneclicksearch.com" consistently coming up in your browser is more common than you think.  It is one of the top 3 spyware strings there is. There are a few easy fixes for it, but it usually requires editing the registry....something I wouldn't recommend for someone that isn't familiar with registry editing.  I use the internal commands for registry editing, but there are a few programs out there that let you edit it....
