WW,
Call Kits cameras, they have comp pricing and will tell you the pros and cons of each one. I had a Sony that we dropped in the water (it wasn't water proof). It was decent but the processor speed was slow. This time we bought a Pentax that is water proof to 5 ft 5 megapixel bla bla but it doesn't take action pics (they blur) so were prob going to take it bck. I think we will get a Cannon this time. Good luck.  :good

I went back to film; Minolta SLR & zoom lens.

Much better for framing the picture and getting good "stop-action" shots.  I get single print and they digital scan the negatives onto a CD.

Still have digital cameras around for general family stuff.

I just bought a olympus e-300 8 mega-pix slr with a zuiko digital 10-45 and a zuiko 45-150 lens for $945 at fry's.
Normaly this would be about $1300 with the extra lens. This camera is by far the best camera I have ever owned. I have owned 35mm slr's and everything in between. I carry an olympus c-720 also. It is a great camera also. very easy to use and has a setting for everything you can imagine. I would say stay with an olympus. My 720 has been very abused and still works like a champ. plus if you can spin a dial and push a couple of menu buttons you can do any thing in the world you want with one. But this is just my 2 cents I am sure there are some other brands that are just as good or better but olympus is just the brand I have had the best sucess with.
Hope this help's some :beer

Also what are you going to use it for? This plays a major role in what functions you need or will want.  :good

Wade, I recommend an Olympus as well.  You've seen the one that I've got.   :good  And they come with decent photo software so you can resize and edit your pics.

Just don't buy a big focking camera like I did.  It's a pain to lug around at the lake or races or whatever.

4 megapixels is more than enough for snapshots and such.

be using it for general use mostly, I would just rather have all of my photos on the comp or CD because whenever I want to see a pic I can never find it because they are in boxes etc... I also will need to take pics of jobs that I dont really need prints of unless there is a problem. Thanks everyone for all the feedback this will really help me  :)  :)

I have a Canon 20D and a 300D, both digital SLRs.  Not convenient for everyday picture taking, but I shoot alot of motorsports, some for sale, and I need the reach of some big lenses.  SLRs get expensive once you start paying a couple grand for each lens.  Some of the new digital under $300 bucks take some fantastic pictures though. Don't get hung up on megapixels, get a quality brand for the best pictures.

second that, huge mega-pix are great for photoshop editing but not mandatory for for taking great photos. my three mega-pix takes great photos. The best advice I can give you is tell the salesman to get you the owners manual , grab the things off the shelf and proceed to play with them. The one you feel most comfertable using and is easy for you to navigate through the menu and functions would be the one I would buy. This is the main reason I like olympus beacause they are easy for me to use. but you may hate it.  :good

Olympus is the way to go. I payed about $800 for mine 2 years ago, and well worth the money. It's a c-5050 and takes incredible photos of lightning which is what I use it for most of the time.  :good

This past Xmas I bought my wife the Canon digital Rebel because it uses the same lens' as the 35mm Rebel that she already had.
Love the camera. 1 GB memory holds a ton of shots. Battery lasts forever. Its fast and has just about every feature you can think of.
I haven't seen it discounted since I bought it and I shopped for months trying to find the cheapest price.
It's not cheap but worth it. :good

Another vote for the Canon S1 IS, they have the S2 now which is a 5 mgp camera instead of the 3.2 the S1 is.  The best part about these two camaras are, image stabilization, that means that you don't get many blurry pictures, and an LCD that moves around all over the place.  I use it on the boat all the time to take pictures, and the pictures don't even come out blurry, even though we are going thru some rough stuff out there on the lake, even when zoomed all the way, which it has a 10x optical zoom.  This camera is also a camcorder that records at DVD quality.  Just can't say enough about it, I have had several digital cameras, and for the price, nothing has come close.  Good luck and choose wisely.

Another vote for the Cannon 20D.I also have a Cannon Elan 7 film SLR.But I love my 20D 8.2 megapix is excellent for action shots and interchangable lenses makes regular point and shoot digitals obsolete.Although pricy it was worth every penny. Now I just need to get a 400 mm or larger image stabalizing lense to go with my 75 to 300 and 28 to 90 zoom lenses.Combined with a Cannon i9900 printer and I can print pics as good as any professional photographer or studio at a fraction of the cost. And the money I save on Christmas portriats of the kidds and cards will pay for itself in notime.
