Saw this article today....
Team-up to keep the river safe NEEDLES, Calif. - Law enforcement officers are joining together to reduce the number of impaired boaters on the Colorado River. "San Bernardino County, Mohave County, and Arizona Game and Fish are going to have a joint OUI check point on the Colorado River," said San Bernardino County Sheriff's Sgt. Phil Odom. The checkpoint will be in effect sometime during the end of August.
ON the river  ....this should be interesting....

Here in Austin they just set up a mobile testing truck. Looks like one of those old SWAT trucks. Anyway, you beach your boat and then as you're walking up the ramp they politley ask if would step inside their office. Doesnt take much to blow a .08. Just a scam.

I read on the web: KINGMAN, Ariz. - A multi-agency Operating Under the Influence (OUI) checkpoint resulted in 123 watercraft being checked along a stretch of the Colorado River on June 7, say Arizona Game and Fish Department officers.
The checkpoint, conducted on the beaches of the Colorado River Nature Center in Bullhead City, involved the efforts of the Game and Fish Department, the Bullhead City Police Department, and the Nevada Division of Wildlife.
A total of123 watercraft came through the checkpoint and 63 percent were found to be in compliance with state watercraft laws. Officers issued 35 citations and 10 warnings to boat operators.
"I feel the checkpoint was a definite success," says Chris Crawforth, regional law enforcement specialist for the Arizona Game and Fish Department. "The compliance rate was lower than usual. This means we need to continue with this effort. Safety violations are the reasons people do not survive boating accidents."
Supporting the effort were: Quizno's Subs, Wiernerschitzel and Pizza Hut.

Most of the safety checks found not enough PFD's on board...
This was a good one: At most of the checkpoints, boaters were queried on whether they had consumed some alcohol during the day. Fifty-percent of the boaters at the Havasu checkpoint said they had consumed alcohol, 27 percent at Lake Mead, and 19 percent at Bullhead City.

Hardly a scam when you see the aftermath of the alcohol caused boating wrecks. |
The Boating News link on Topix.Net is FILLED with National stories daily about accidents and loss of life on the water.... Makes you wonder if it's safe any more out there...
