1. Putting my newly powdercoated intake manifold back on without a torque wrench ( I wasnt even close to 30 ft. lbs.). Needless to say, water got in places that it isnt supposed to...not good.

2. Getting a new rocker after the pushrod pushed thru an old one, and, having no idea how to set lash, just guessing on how tight that it should be. The result: a lobe off of my cam being completely rounded off, destroying the cam.

3. Thinking that the knocking sound that I was hearing was the bendix on my starter not disengaging off of the flexplate. Guess what? It wasnt. It was a bent pushrod.

At this point, my dad (a more than competent motor man) has had enough of my fumbling, and agrees to rebuild the entire motor for me from the ground up. After over $1200 in new cam, pushrod, piston, rings, magnafluxing the heads, etc. etc. It is back to its old self. We break the cam in, oil pressure good, motor is tight and running strong again.

So, here is how I destroyed the rebuild in just 5 minutes!!!!

4. Going out to the lake, firing boat up, and noticing there is no oil pressure reading. I ASSUME that the sending unit has gone bad (eventhough it worked 3 days before) and ignore it. Turns out that after I drained the old oil out after break-in, the new oil filter doesnt seat properly due to part of the previous gasket sticking on the block. All oil has drained out, and the motor grenades itself.

5. All hope is not lost...yet. I bring boat home, disengage driveline, hook garden hose up, and turn on the water BEFORE trying to start the boat. Result? As I try to turn the motor over, ALL cylinders are filled with water ( I dont know this until the next teardown). The motor that my dad spent 3 weeks rebuilding is total shit now. Only the block is salvagable, everything thing else of importance is destroyed.

So, there is my last 2 summers in a nutshell. I had a new motor built to the tune of $5000, and the boat once again runs great. Man, I just looooooooooooooooooooooove self imposed mechanical gremlins!!!!

Oh, and for the record it was 7.5 mph according to my indash GPS (had to turn it on because the GPS speedo doesn't pick up until around 20 mph).   :bebe  :ass  :D

If karma did indeed get me, I am quite positive that I have paid my debt, and then some.

I wanted to share this so that no only could people laugh at my stupidity, but to make everyone aware how quickly things can go south if you make bad decisions like I did.

My dad was ready to hang me from a yardarm after I told him what I did to the newly rebuilt motor. My wife was ready to hire someone to "accidentally" drop some TNT in the boat while I was at work. Remember B.O.A.T. = Break Out Another Thousand.

Anyways, I am on my way to the lake today. Low 90's here. And I definitely miss my SoCal bretheren...-DD Out

Hello everyone!!

New guy here.

I finally decided to stop lurking and join in. I must say that I have enjoyed the HDF forums.

It is amazing how much I have in common with many of you.

I had to make coment on DD's set-backs.

(long story short) I purchased a 73' Kachina Jet 18' about ten-twelve years ago. Being the son of an Original Van Nuys Blvd. resident drag racer, my father tought me motors very young. Of course the first thing I did was rip out the Small Block Chevy and build the hell out of it. If I recall the dyno sheet came out a little over 500 h.p. ( with Iron heads)

I was very proud of that engine, and with the rest of the boat I might add. Full on bow mural and everything. I remember crushing every Big Block jet and a good few v-drives, sorry GFR  :D !!!

Every winter I tore it down and went through it. The last season owned it sounds similar to that of DickDanger.

I once assembled it the day before a Havi trip and ran it in the driveway. the phone rang, and I left the water running the whole time I was on the phone. (you probably know the rest)

Yep!! When I came back out and hit the key---- HYDROLOCK!!!    Guess it backed up in the headers. This resulted in a total "pit crew" rebuild.

The next day, Havi guests standing and watching, I had the entire engine re-assembled and ready to go. Carefully started it and all was good !

Went to Havasu that day. That evening, feeling spunky and all out running, I blew a sparkplug clean out of its metal casing and into my fiberglass gas tank. DAMN Scary sound, but no fire, I have never seen that happen before.

Shortly there after I sold the boat to a good friend who used and abused it for the rest of the season. At the end of the season he changed the oil for one last run and hit the lake. Right off the ramp somebody picked a race with him, of course he ran it, but lost! it seems that the motor just started loading up and slowed down to its eventual death. As he got up to look and see why, he found himself standing in about 12 quarts of oil. (big sump)

Yep!!!  DOUBLE GASKET on the filter. He never bothered to look at the oil pressure guage.

I helped him rebuild it. Damn sad!! (at least the steel crank was spared)

The next trip he took was again a disaster. Roller Rocker backed off and killed the rocker, push rod, roller lifter, and "Racer Brown" custom grind cam. And who knows what else, I was too sad to get involved anymore.

Just thought you might enjoy the similarities in events.

O.K. --  Long story, not so short!!!

I have been a lake junkie all my life and vowed to return with a bigger and better boat, and I finally have. I just picked up a 26' commander Signature, 7.4 bravo 1. I have only had it out twice, but I will be hitting it hard for the rest of the summer. I hope to get in on some of the HDF crew activities, and I will be posting as best I can. When I figure out how all of this works, I will include some pictures also. .

Glad to know that some people can appreciate the pain that I have been through the past 2 summers. I dont know what it is, but I ALWAYS have to learn things the hard way. Forever and ever.

NEVER turn the water from a garden hose on until AFTER the motor has been started (as I learned). The water will back up right thru the exhaust valves into the cylinders. Also, kill the water BEFORE shutting the motor off. I read Shoemakers comments in this months "Hot Boat" and although I know that Greg knows what he is doing, he advised shutting the motor off first, and then the water. I disagree with that. Your headers are not going to blue, and your motor wont overheat in the 20 seconds between turning the hose off and killing the motor.

On the flip side, the lake was kickass today, and the weather great, although it is getting a little windy now. I am taking the Indian for a ride up to Sun Valley tomorrow, and it should be a killer time!!!

Welcome trawfish, and thanks for sharing your pain!!!  :beer
